If she knew what she had and she left it there... well, she should have known it would be taken honestly.

So stealing is justified by the "Owner should have known better" defense. Come on judge, he shouldn't have left his Bugatti parked in the parking garage unattended. He was asking to have it taken by somebody that could appreciate it more than he.

Merc Man, you have a point about people just taking something for appreciation. I guess if the teller was facing the person taking the coin and you just offered an even exchange then there is more of a chance for the teller to know what she is giving up. In the Bugatti example, a person could offer a honda civic for the Bugatti and if the person gave up the Bugatti, then that is a fair loss for the Bugatti owner who should have known it was a bad trade.

Okay, so this Bugatti example doesn't really fit here.. for a few reasons.
1. The Bugatti (I assume you mean a Veyron) costs about a million dollars.. so, not anywhere near the value of the items mentioned here. This is like compring ruby studded platinum apples and regular old oranges.
2. The dime was not something that had a title, or proof of ownership.
3. If the $1,000,000 Bugatti was stolen and replaced with something worth $100,000,000 (100 times the price of the Bugatti when it was new, just like the dime/dollar) that owner would be the stupidest person in history if they made a stink about it.

Also, the point I was trying to make with my last post was that she probably had no idea what was in the tip jar.

Your right, Bugatti example was bad. All that needs to be said on this whole thread is taking something that belongs to someone else without their permission is stealing no matter how you attempt to justify it.

Merc Man, Yeah I suppose it is stealing. I guess that it's just on such a petty level that it's so debateable. Maybe it's more like replacing a nice pen worth 3 dollars with a 10 cent pen when no one is looking.

If this was the case, I bet she would have pocketed it right away or bought it from the jar herself. I doubt she would have left it sitting on top of the change in the tip jar and in a position for something like this to happen.

When the merc was put into her tip jar, it WAS her property. It was already, in essence, pocketed.

You did the right thing and I would have done that too, My worry is if you notify her and she doesn't understand what your trying to do because then even if you do do it she'll think your stealing the dime. Your a coin collector, you should be allowed to do stuff like that.

First off, I don't know why this topic has been posted on after such a long break from the last post.... But o well...

I followed this last time (to great enjoyment) and held my tongue because I didn't feel like arguing... But stealing is stealing, no matter how you look at it or how big or small! I'm not one to judge... I really don't care. I've done FAR worse things in my life..... Far far far worse.... Though I never stole.

But:

WHAT? I can't hold my tongue on this... I really hope that was a joke? Because that's one of the dumbest comments I've ever heard.... No offense intended but I really can't think of a better word to describe it...

And just for the record, I know a fellow who works at my local Dunkin Donuts, he's a friend of my younger brother. And he has become quite the silver stacker only from coins he's traded out with the register as well as the tip cup.. An unreal amount actually.... He wasn't a collector before this job, but obviously realized some coins were different and now is.. Bottom line, stealing is stealing no matter how small.

I think a mod should lock this thread. It's being brought back to life.

I'm just saying...

How 'bout leaving your credit card in the tip jar?
Strange as it may seem, I have never owned a credit card.

Ah well, a silver dime is only a silver dime, anyway. Philosophically, I could have just walked away without too much bother.
I have about 100 junk silver dimes already. Perhaps I don't need any more. I don't really know what I will eventually do with them.
