Man, I would have said "no thanks" and took my business elsewhere. No way I'd chance them doing the same thing to me.

If you loose one key they get two new ones made for you to pick up.
For some unknown reason I rented the new ones? Ooo snap!

Torn and frayed,
The box was full of what looked like a whole bunch of forms, files, records, CD's, backup disks, and lots of it.
I did not really look into it too much.
Taking anything would've been fishy and they would've known it was me.
That said though it really isn't all settled yet. They had the replacement keys made and could've already entered unknown to me or the owner.
I've left the country, vacation time, and when I get back I'm making an appointment at that bank.

I just don't understand why you would even consider trusting this bank with protecting your valuables. At best they have some very lax and/or poorly thought out SOP's. There is really no reasonable explanation for something like this happening and given that anything that goes missing from your box will not be replaced by the bank this would be more than enough of a reason for me not to rent a box from them. In fact it would be very difficult for me not to pull all of my business from them.

An extremely rare set of circumstances has happened for me to have this experience.
(2005p non mag in the first set I checked was another one)
The owner of the box #227 lost the key.
The new keys were made. (that explains the extra set of keys)

Shouldn't matter, the two locks on the box should be different and they should not have a spare key to make a new key from. If the owner of #227 lost his key they should have had to drill the lock. If the bank had a spare copy of YOUR key it would leave themselves open for charges of theft from the box. For that reason they don't have spare keys.

What could have happened was the previous owner closed out his box and returned the key, but didn't bother to empty the box and just abandoned the contents and the bank never checked to make sure it was empty before re-renting it.

If the bank DOES keep spare keys then you DON'T want to rent there.

Conder101's explanation seems to make the most sense here.

I dont really understand the need for Bank Deposit boxes except perhaps for wills/trusts/deeds/stocks or other paper documents, but even those have digital copies someplace these days.

If you have a safe in your house you can get robbed just as easy as someone could force you to go to the bank and retrieve your valuables from a box. The key to not being robbed is making sure no one knows what you have.

Wow... Like many others that have commented, I would not feel comfortable leaving things there.
I'm sure it was an honest mistake, and it would likely never happen again... but still.
I would need to be sure my things were securely stored in a different bank before I could get any sleep.

The bank is only as safe as the people working there. I prefer to keep my stuff close to my person at all times, or at least close.

I feel stupid now, but I never thought of this before... My wife and I both have keys to our safe deposit box. We didn't have to do anything special. They just handed each of us a key when we opened the account, so they probably have 2 keys for every box in their safe, whether the owners need 2 or not. I wonder if they have more than 2...

It's not theft I fear as much as fire. Most home safes are shabby and fireproof for maybe half an hour. The key to safe storage is to diversify locations.

You're exactly right about diversifying.

Also,

If you loose one key and go into the bank there is no need to drill the lock.
When your new keys are ready to pick up make sure you go pick them up.

The box I left my stuff in has two keys. No extras.

After the events that unfolded two weeks ago I went into the bank on Tuesday.
I was unavailable to be contacted as I was on a vacation.
The trouble that was started was extreme.
This bank knows me by the huge number of penny's and nickels I've picked up there over the last year.
All the steps to ensuring this would not happen were not followed.
The highest up was at lunch so I waited to see him. I was asked if they could help in the meantime and I said no.
My lease is no charge.
Really stirred them up with facts of what went on.
ALL my banking has been free with this bank for a long time so I hate to switch.
No fees on anything, at all, including SDB in this case.

The extra keys were a business through lack of communication left their keys after one was lost and two new ones were made with a new lock.

The lease agreement was not checked to be already rented because of the keys.

The sign in card again was not checked.

The box was NOT checked to be empty before I rented it.

The bank is responsible for an error of this type and large chunks of brown stuff hit the air supply in the week I was gone.

Most public schools in the US have one set of Master Keys. The principal usually has them. A few yrs ago the same school's principal lost the set of Master Keys TWICE within a few yrs. A very costly mistake.
