If this is normal wear from circulation then I have a hard time believing it was in circulation in the US long enough to get this worn. Is the thought this was a pocket piece? What are the chances this ended up circulating to a much later date in another country (Mexico etc?) and then found its way back? Just curious - as worn as it is, it's still a nice coin.

I don't think I've ever seen one that worn

That Peace dollar looks cool. I was never a fan of Lowball coins until I found myself and realized just how long it takes to get one in that shape. It always makes me wonder why someone would take the time to carry a coin so long as to cause it to wear that much. Good luck piece, sentimental reasons, or could be any number of things? It seems like a shame to just melt it down. I'm glad you saved it.

I truly enjoy these well worn coins ... believe they have served well in the commerce of our nation. Regardless of how they were 'made' ... IMHO these coins inspire honest wonder about what they have seen and how they arrived to us today. Agree with SsuperDdave this might be a 1928 ... alas way too worn to have a hint of an mintmark. In my personal pursuit for low-ball Peace dollars I have come across three of these truly well worn examples ... Thanks for sharing the coin and photos. David

Its pretty worn even if in the ground I doubt it would be that bad. Maybe it was on a old country gravel road for years before it was found. Wow who knows I sure don't. Its still cool but would go in my melt pile if it were mine.

Definitely a pocket piece, IMO. I've seen them this worn. A family friend had a Seated half dollar that he somehow kept in his pocket for over 50 years. It looked very similar to this one.
