Is it larger than a normal cent? I've heard of people pressing a cent in a vice with two pieces of leather on each side of the coin. This enlarges the coin was it flattens out the devices and stretches the planchet. They call them Texas cents. Looks like you coin may have been altered this way?

I just weighed it on a mail scale(I know it needs to be weighed in grams but it is all I have right now) It weighs the same as a 1968 penny I have. It is also normal diameter. Baffeled by this one coop? What next do you think?

The coin may have been altered as I suggested, but with not as much force in the vise. It obviously didn't happen at the mint. So it is PMD. I appreciate the extra pictures. That made me come to that conclusion. With both side affected, it happened at the same time. Hope this helps.

Thanks for taking the time and examining coop! This coin came out of a old man's collection book that I bought. Maybe he was flattening them! lol. So... there is no possible way this could ever happen to a coin at the mint? Please excuse my lack of knowledge, I'm planning on reading up as much as I can this weekend on doubled dies.

Hey coop! I think I'm on to something! Check this link out I found on ebay about sms coins or "special mint" as reup mentioned earlier http://www.ebay.com/gds/What-is-an-...99096/g.html They made these special mint coins only for certain years I guess and they were made with a different type of process. I think this coin may be one of those. Do you think this is one of those coins and maybe it was doubled in that different process or finish they put on? Again, please excuse my lack of knowledge with the doubled dies. Take a look and tell me what you think. Thanks!

You have to consider the time period. The mint had to ramp up production of coins. The silver was being pulled from circulation at the 1964 last years for the silver dime, quarter, halves. All these were removed from circulation. They coins were not even mint marked to keep collectors from needing to collect ones from all mints. The SMS were used as a short cut to save time in making proof coins. Even the West Point was making coins. So all 4 mint were making non mint marked coins. So it was not a good thing for collectors then. It was a step back from coin collecting excellence.

Sorry, didn't mean to get your hope up. I just wanted to give you something to watch for next time you have 1966 cents to go through.
