Well when NGC announced the retro holder they said that it would only be available for ASE and small dollars and only available until Dec 31st 2012. They DIDN'T announce that Authorized Dealers could also slab Morgan and Peace dollars in the Retro holders but that Collectors society members could not. Now it is starting to look like the authorized dealers are being given another exclusive. The ability to have coins put in retro holders after they were supposedly discontinued. I wonder if they will still be able to put the small sized dollars and continue slabbing Morgan and Peace dollars in them as well?

Otay maybe its just me but I was always told you buy the coin not the holder. My humble opinion.

BTTB: That statement always hold true in MOST CASE. Some exception: 1) Sample slab, special/unique slab (such as NGC original black core holder) - Conder101 can confirm this. 2) When the coin AND the holder, together, meet the standard/requirement of the buyer (ie: I want to assemble a set of all RP ASE in PF70 NGC holder, so when the coin is graded PF70 (according standard) then I would buy the slabbed-coin. In this case, I'm not buying a PCGS or ANACS etc (ie: holder specific). 3) When the coin in the holder is under-graded (you want to pay the holder/label price), this is sometime called cherry-picking. My main issue is NGC's business practice.

Another reason why I am glad that I do not collect slabs.

jbuck - I am starting to seriously be convinced that people are just buying holders. This ER/FS label is like a feeding frenzy over a shipping date and now we have TPG creating another frenzy over colorized schemes and retro styling... really just get me the coins already!

If people were just buying holders they would just buy empty slabs. Just like if you were really just buying the coin you would just have the coin and nothing else, no holders, no albums, no 2x2s, no ogp. All that stuff is presentation which is exactly what the labels and special holders are, added presentation to the graded coin.

basebal - the grade is all I care about on the coin. Which is why the other stuff is useless drivel to me. Yes you might resell it in the future for what you paid extra for in packaging - or not - depending on who is looking to buy it. If it was me, then I am going to look for the highest graded best looking "coin" and don't care if it is a black/blue or any new aged other holder. I collect coins.

Its nothing more than added presentation. I dont pay the extra fees to get them on coins I send in, I let someone else worry about the fees. If I like it ill get it, if I dont I wont. I think theyve done a good job overall of making them attractive but some have been duds. The FS means nothing to me but is generally put on the special labels, if its a normal label ill get the FS if its the same price other wise I pass

Like I've stated: My main concern is the business practice of TPG in general and specifically NGC in this case. If they can't keep their own word, change/do whatever they want regardless of collectors/buyer concern (same as US Mint regarding the 2012-S ASE) then should we continue to trust them? I don't really what they put on the market (I don't care about ER/FS when consider buying the coin), as long as they stick to their gun and keep their word. Btw, I have to agree with baseball21. Some care about the extra/fancy stuff, some just want plain vanilla. Diversity is good for the market BUT inconsistency is BAD.

I like how labels drive people nuts, I've been collecting some older moderns and not to long ago slab labels used to be pretty darn basic. It's pretty well known that corporations do whatever they want, within the law, and otherwise, but certainly enough, lying, or going back on your word is not against the law either, unless someone decides to sue for damages incurred as a result, which is common as well.

Thats what they should be concerned about as well. In the short run theyll get some extra interest from it, but in the long run itll destroy any premium on it which hurts them overall and any future efforts at it.

NGC sent an email a couple weeks ago with details on submitting WP 2 coin sets. They mentioned that the black holder was back for this set by popular demand. Your average person just buys the slab. I see auctions all the time on ebay with badly spotted SAEs going for more than clean coins because they have a desired label.
