Need Help. Wondering If I Got A Fake Graded Coin

I still a curious as to why you believe it's fake though, that would still be helpful info even with the pics, as well as I would help others to learn what to watch for. Did you go to the NGC site and check the certification number? Or does the slab and/or coin just look totally off to you?

I'm just wondering why someone would fake a common 1896 MS-63.. It's like a $60 coin, there's really no price jumps until you get to MS-65, 66 and a huge jump for 67.. I could see the potential profit in faking a 67 slab but wonder why if someone was trying to make money by counterfeiting a slab they would put the money into faking a common date and slab it as a 63. You get what I mean? And again, your observations as to why you believe it's a fake slab would help others to learn what to look for.

I see no real reason to believe it's anything but a clerical error. No idea whether the error is in the online listing or the slab - I'm inclined to believe the former - but the pics aren't quite clear enough to form a real opinion of the actual grade.

I absolutely agree with SsuperDdave.. Clerical error. It is definitely known to happen, and while not super common, unfortionitely it happens more than we might want to believe.

All of the third party graders have changed their slabs a few times over the years and yours definitely is one that was commonly used by NGC, but you will see other types as well.

But Noah's idea is definitely a good one as well.. It couldn't hurt to call NGC and see what they say.. Even if to only find out if the typo is on their cert page or the slab itself.

But bottom line I'd be inclined to say you have no worries, the coin is most definitely real, as is the slab. Just human error and a typo. Now the only question would be is it actually a 62 or a 63... And again Noah's suggestion of calling NGC may be able to help out with that.

Trouble is, it's very likely the cert verification page is a direct query to their database, so the only thing NGC knows is that coin is now a 62 in their records whether they originally called it 63 or not.
