First off I am new here and not to familiar with coins. But I recently acquired a coin from a craigalist trade. And I want to know if its authentic ( the slabbing) I did a little research and from what I read mine could be fake slabbed
I'm on my phone and I can't post pics but I can send some pics to your email address so you can check it out ( and could possibly post the pics in my thread for me so others can see it) I just want to get the authenticity verified by people who know what they are talking about. Thanks in advance

Without a pic it's going to be very hard to help out. Oh should be able to upload photos from your phone.. Many members, as well as myself do.
But for starters.. What company slabbed the coin? What's the coin? And year, mintmark and the given grade? What's the certification # on the slab? Do you think the coin is fake, or just the slab it's in? And finally why do you believe its fake?
Edit** nevermind.. Lol, awaiting pics from SsuperDdave...

Thanks for the warm welcome and your willingness to help me out superdave. I just emailed you 5 photos. I just want a few opinions or so for proof . Real or fake slabbed that way if it is fake I can contact the guy I got it from and can prove to him the authenticity . Thanks again

Nathan. I tried uploading but it's not letting me from my phone. Instead of giving details of what the coin is Id rather just have someone post pics for me that way they can check it out for theirselves. I felt the pics would be better rather than just saying in words what the coin is. It's Ngc 1896 ms 63 Morgan dollar

Huh, I wonder why your phone didnt work? O well, doesn't matter. No problem, a pic would definitely be a better help anyways. I only asked those things as often people are cautious about giving there private email addresses on an open forum, but for a moderator with a site email it's much better.. I still a curious as to why you believe it's fake though, that would still be helpful info even with the pics, as well as I would help others to learn what to watch for. Did you go to the NGC site and check the certification number? Or does the slab and/or coin just look totally off to you? I'm just wondering why someone would fake a common 1896 MS-63.. It's like a $60 coin, there's really no price jumps until you get to MS-65, 66 and a huge jump for 67.. I could see the potential profit in faking a 67 slab but wonder why if someone was trying to make money by counterfeiting a slab they would put the money into faking a common date and slab it as a 63. You get what I mean? And again, your observations as to why you believe it's a fake slab would help others to learn what to look for. And I'm sorry, where were my manors, I didn't even notice it was your first post... So !

I'm so sorry but I forgot to mention. I checked the number on the ngc website and it states that the coin is what it actually is but shows the grade being a ms62 and the paper in the slab says ms63. That's one red flag . With the rise of silver over the years anybody will do anything for a quick buck I guess

Can you see the slab on NGCs website? Are you saying it says MS62 but your slab says MS63? What is your cert #?

OK, just checking. Some of their coin certifications show a photo of the slab.

I absolutely agree with SsuperDdave.. Clerical error. It is definitely known to happen, and while not super common, unfortionitely it happens more than we might want to believe.
All of the third party graders have changed their slabs a few times over the years and yours definitely is one that was commonly used by NGC, but you will see other types as well.
But Noah's idea is definitely a good one as well.. It couldn't hurt to call NGC and see what they say.. Even if to only find out if the typo is on their cert page or the slab itself.
But bottom line I'd be inclined to say you have no worries, the coin is most definitely real, as is the slab. Just human error and a typo. Now the only question would be is it actually a 62 or a 63... And again Noah's suggestion of calling NGC may be able to help out with that.
