Cleaned or not cleaned! The real deciding factor as far as I'm concerned is it's actual appearance when 'in hand'. What does it actually look like when you are holding it. How does it look along side of the rest of your coins in a set etc. That would be the real deciding factor as to what to pay for the piece.

Personally, I don't really care if a coin is cleaned or not. Value wise, it's always better to get something uncleaned, but if I see a cleaned coin that is bright and white, and it looks MS, then I don't mind it. I used to think that it was bad, but after seeing how many nice cleaned coins that are out there, I have changed my mind.

Just an update the coin went for $1080 and I am not the new owner.

"Cleaned" is also a very inclusive word and the difference between cleaning agents/methods can be astronomical. Given two identical coins, one cleaned by soaking in Acetone and one cleaned by scrubbing with a toothbrush dipped in Ajax; obviously the values would differ.
I agree with OldDan, it depends....

I wouldn't mind being the owner of that coin, cleaned or not. Looks nice to me...

Yep that was the coin. Was $1008 instead of 1080.

Now here is something interesting on cleaning coins. Go to www.pennycollector.com and then click on cleaning coins. Very interesting.

horror of horrors, just_carl. That advice is so, so bad, I thought it must be in jest. A checklist of sure ways to destroy your coins.

Ok, it seems the whole idea at that page is to describe techniques to make your pennies shiny before you smash them into elongated cents. Kinda of like preparing the planchet before striking.

Yes, t360, Carl's link is not about coin cleaning so much as it's about copper slug cleaning.

That may be the case, but for those new to collecting and not aware of the damage cleaning can do, he should have but a disclaimer with that link. If someone goes to that site and then does something from that site (and doesn't read anything else, etc.) then that could be disastrous for their collection, both now and in the future.
