Note that this is Illegal to own and possess.

Which is completely ridiculous. If you knowingly spend it, it would be illegal, but possession?

How many crooks is Tim's making in a week?

That's the first fake 2004 I've seen. I have a 2005 and a 2006.
They would have been much easier to produce than fake bills, meaning the crooks were less likely to get caught. That's why they only did coins. :)

Here is a small article on it. I believe they were a company that produced medals, tokens etc... The RCMP went there on a revenue Canada related issue and found the counterfeiting while there. I believe thats why twoonies were produced, they basically had the means to do it. People started dubbing it the "Montreal Mint" for fun.

I always assumed there was fake coins out there but this is the first time I ever heard of the Montreal mint, and the first time (that I know of) that I seen one. I want to learn what to look for in fakes but Iam still trying to learn what to look for in real ones...great info again, smart post. We should all be aware of this stuff.

Thanks for the links , this is an interesting story. What happened after the initial arrests? how many people were convicted ? Did the authorities ever find out how long they had been making fake coins for?

The RCMP cracked the operation in 2005. One may find 2004 and 2005 dated fakes but no 2006.

If someone has a 2006 PLEASE send it to the RCMP for investigation - this may be a "mint" other than the Montreal.

I would suggest all to study the exceptional pictures to learn to recognize this criminal forgery
Rest in Peace

Funny to hear an earlier poster making reference to Tims making criminals. I checked change that I am almost certain came from a TH today. I had this in it. What do you think of this pic of a 2005 toonie? Is it one of the 'special' ones?

Hard to tell with the photo, it actually looks normal.... put it side by side with a normal twoonie prior to 2012. If it is not real, the ring will look different (colour and texture) from a normal nickel ring.

About 25% thinner and whiter in color on the edge. 7.27 grams. I have added a couple of other pics as well. To me it looks much different at the edges. I assume that the edges are not nickel as they seem to show much wear but I am no expert.
I won't spend it anyway. I was more curious than anything else.
Thanks,
Dave
