Prooflike, the toning is too heavy to get a dimple out of it.

Yup, they definitely have DMPL toners, you've definitely seen them. Lol don't worry your not going crazy I'd say yours looks PL, possibly even DMPL, it's hard to tell from the videos though. It doesn't show up at all with a reflection test at all? Have you tried with different angles and lighting? It looks PL in the photos but still should be at least a little reflective with a test. Or are there any clear areas you can see better? .

If the reflectivity isn't there to the point you can see a clear reflection, it won't hit a DMPL grade.

If the pictures were all I had to go on, I would have said there is little chance its PL. On the other hand, the videos show a coin that is at least PL.

I found this;
DMPL Reflectivity Scale Here is the scale that denotes the proper designation for the coin, based on reflectivity: •Semi-Prooflike (SPL) - 1 to 2 inches, devices must be frosted •Prooflike (PL) - 2 to 4 inches of reflectivity •Deep Mirror Prooflike (DMPL) - More than 4 inches •Ultra Prooflike (UPL) - At least 8 inches

That isn't the PL/DMPL scale PCGS/NGC use. They each have different standards... for PL, I think NGC is 4+ inches, PCGS is 5+ inches, and DM NGC is 8 and PCGS is 10? Don't quote me on that, it's been forever since I've looked it up.

Your videos prove there is no cartwheel on this coin. Definitely PL and may have been DMPL before it toned. Beautiful Morgan either way!

1) Nice morgan
2) The video you took with your phone, it looks like, my OCD or whatever is tripping. Your phone still takes video when held landscape orientation.

I found these standards on the PCGS website. So far I haven't found one from NGC. Proof Like (PL) - Morgan dollars. Clear reflection in the fields on both sides from 2-4 inches away. A misty effect or striations may impede the reflectivity. Deep Mirror Proof Like (DMPL) - Morgan dollars. Clear reflection in the fields on both sides from at least 6 inches away. 2. Must be full, undistorted reflectivity on both the obverse and reverse. http://www.pcgs.com/nogrades.html

I assume that would make my Morgan a PL then.

Update... This coin was sent in to NGC and just got the grading report on it.. All it got was a lousy 58 :(
Will update more coins that was sent in that I have posted in the grading sectione in the last year or so... some great news, some not as great...

The words 'cartwheel' or 'radial' usually have more to with lustre in high condition NON DMPL coins. When DMPL is mentioned, the word 'mirror' comes to mind. This sort of lustre is different in character.
It seems to me from the above discussion that toning CAN adversely affect mirror performance, and therefore makes it harder to determine if a coin is DMPL or not.

It's after the fact, but based on your original photos I was thinking the coin showed some disruptions in the fields consistent with light friction. Therefore, an AU58 grade may be what it technically deserves.
ANACS at least will slap a PL designation on AU coins on occasion (I have an AU58 PL double eagle in an ANACS slab). I don't know whether NGC will state PL for a coin judged to be below MS60. Your videos certainly suggest the coin has high reflectivity in the fields.

Looks like AU58 PL is somewhat analogus to an impaired proof.
