This is the first coin I ever learned had any value. Back in elementary school there was a coin book in the school library saying it's worth $10,000. I thought for sure I had one before but it could've easily been a small date.

Rather than investing in tonight's Lotto Max draw, I decided to purchase a box of dimes today. It's been a while since I've done any CRH (it's been a while since nickel was $20/lb), but I was surprised how difficult it was to find coins pre 2000. Maybe 15% were. However, I was also surprised at the number of 1968s I found (25 1968s vs. 3 1969s). The mintage figures seem to suggest a 3:1 ratio.
One thing I discovered about dimes is that the dates can be quite hard to read with the naked eye! I even have better than 20/20 vision.
Pulled 1 silver (1962), and 3 rolls of American dimes (took no extra effort, so figured why not).
No 1969 Large Date, but still returned a whopping $1.29 on my $250 investment!! (75 cents for the US, $1.34 for the silver, minus 80 cents for short rolls). Probably better than I would've done on Lotto Max anyways!

Libertad - you reminded me of the kid at my elementary school who insisted that he had Boardwalk for McDonald's Monopoly, but couldn't find Park Place, so he didn't win the $1 Million.

@jg86 Then mint has been running ARP (Alloy Recovery Program) for a number of years now. Probably having a noticeable impact on CRH by now. Check the older threads for more info.

 To spend that amount of money on one modern day coin that has a significant "problem" associated to it on the Certificate is questionable? Can you imagine how many gorgeous Vicky/Eddy/Kink George coins you can have for that price? Glenn  |

kuh - I'm aware. Back in 2007, when I was still a student, I was CRH nickels like crazy, made about $40,000 that summer doing it by hand. Bought a machine afterwards that could do it, but the price started dropping, and went from finding 10 per roll to 4 in no time.
I didn't think they'd be targeting the dimes so much though, there can't be much more than 2 cents of nickel in each one.

I've never had anything to do with an auction so I am stunned at the buyers premium, what is the sellers cost.

At most major auctions the buyers premium is around 15 to 18|%

Sellers often pay 5-10% as well.
