You have a good point. It would probably be best to sell it now and give them the money. The trouble is I am based in the UK and not USA and placing it on ebay may be risky.

The details are easy XF but I worry that the surfaces aren't original. As regards liquidation, in your shoes I'd consider contracting with a US auction house such as Heritage or Teletrade; they'd also be able to get your coin into a TPG slab which would be imperative for an issue of such value.

Nice coin, but it would likely get a details grade.

Read all the current replies ... adding my thoughts:
The coin likely has a USA (Sheldon) technical grade of XF45 ... the wear on the obverse portrait hair directly above the eyes is indicative of this grade.
Reasonably well struck ... as evidenced by 11 of the 13 obverse stars exhibiting some level of 6 pedal detail.
That said ... might be the photographs ... but I am concerned this coin has been cleaned at sometime in the past ... the surfaces just do not look original in the photos.
But .. Joy ... this coin is the key date in the series and always commands serious $$ whenever available on the market.
It's likely a $1000 coin even with questionable surfaces ... so good for you!

I have enjoyed reading the various comments and will probably let market forces decide by placing it on ebay. I am not sure if UK ebay can be seen in the US of A

I am not sure if UK ebay can be seen in the US of A I suspect you will surrender a considerable percentage of the coin's value by going this route, especially if it is sold raw and not in a TPG slab.

I got the coin for nothing and it would have remained undiscovered and lost had it not been for this forum
So thinking in terms of your percentages:
x/0=infinite%.
The Grandkids will appreciate the additional pocket money and what value can an old grand dad place on the pleasure it will give? After all I cannot take it with me!

Gotta say, I love the way you look at things. I did a quick comparison of ebay / Teletrade / Heritage and was surprised to see that XF 1885 nickels are not that far apart (who'd a thunk! ) The only downside I see to ebay is the lack of protection you might be opening yourself up to and the potential lack of exposure to American markets. Other than that, it sounds like it is time to remain SuperGrandpa. Please keep us updated on the outcome of your auction.
