My guess is lacquered cent ...and so wonderful to see a 100% unmolested set..
Glad to see that the poor case didn't transfer any damage to them.
Make sure that you keep it that way by getting them in hard flips or better...

What a rare find! I wonder how many of these sets were made and sold? I wasn't aware the mint made collector sets so early in its history. I always thought collector sets started in the fifties. The penny is extra ordinary, wish I had one like it. What's the story of how you came to own it?

My father started collecting coins in the 1920's.
My grandfather had been collecting before then.
My dad passed away a number of years ago.
My mother recently gave me a trunk dad stored coins in.
This set was in the trunk.
I believe my grandfather had purchased the set.

 F.Y.I. , if you ever find another leather case, please don't place these coins back in it. Collector coins, especially RARE and highly sought after such as the 1908 sets should be kept away from the elements as much as possible. either 2 x 2 'em or send them off to I.C.C.S. for best results. You have a gorgeous set here and should feel Happy to own/be in possession of it. Glenn  |

WoW that a terrific heirloom piece. I love the story of your set, owned by 3 generations! I wonder if some of my coins will be passed down to future grankids, only hoping. My son is only 13. I love treasures like that. Interesting to know, collector sets have a history prior to the fifties.

I wonder what kinds of coins your grandfather collected, way back then? It has me intregued to wonder what coins early 1900 collectors chose. I'd love it, if you are able to share any details of your grandfathers collection. How did you and your dad become interested in collecting. I'm curious as to how hobbies get past on down through the generations. Example do people get interested because the parent or other family member also collects? Also do they collect the same coins/ or something different?
