Appears to be a genuine example that has seen some level of circulation wear.
Impossible to judge the surfaces for originality based on the posted photos.

I might be the only one, but I am not sure if this coin is real. I have always thought the "S" should have a more square look. Not sure if CCF will let me post this link ... If so look at the photo of the mint mark in in one of the pics. It shows a more squared off mint mark. http://www.cointalk.com/threads/193...fake.204325/I am not sure if the coin you have pictured is real or fake, I would want to have it slabbed to be sure.

The "S" seems to have a different finish than the overall coin. It should be looked at very closely to make sure the S was not added. Just my Two Cents worth.

I do not see a problem. However, I would want to look at it in hand and certainly get an agreement from the seller guaranteeing it to come back from ANACS as being real.

Thanks for all the feedback. I guess only a reliable TPG can tell for sure.

If you want to send it in to a TPG go for it. Then again the money you will pay, ouch. Are there any reputable coin stores in your area? Try them and be specific with your question. Hope you find the answer.

From the posted pics it looks like an XF/AU'ish 32-S quarter. Looks like the pics were taken under florescent lighting and the photos probably aren't an exact representation of the coin.

The "s" looks suspicious to me

Appears genuine. I would want to see it in hand first. If he has a clear return policy or guarantee of his coins being genuine, I wouldn't worry about it.

Quote:If you want to send it in to a TPG go for it. Then again the money you will pay, ouch Really? Huh. A coin that retails out at 400.00 for an AU58, but spending 20 some bucks to send it to ANACS is an ouch. Oh, a coin that is one of the two keys in the series and is highly counterfeited. Yeah, you are right. That would be wasted money.

A die study may be required. At 400,000 struck, perhaps 4 or 5 pairs of dies would have been used. The characteristics of each of the mint marks needs to be examined and associated with identifying details of the rest of the coin associated with a particular mint mark. Has there been any in depth research published of this nature? Perhaps there may be some paper on the subject somewhere in the ANA filing system. This sort of research would also likely give some idea of the number of altered coins that may exist for the '32S quarter. This sort of die study research is often done with ancient coins, to get some idea of the time spread of a particular type, and the volume of coins produced, based on the estimation of the number of dies likely to have been made.

I've been doing this 30+ years and every dealer and collector I know has said the exact same thing about EVERY 32-S (and D) quarter they ever look at that wasn't slabbed!

For me, it's impossible to say there is or is nothing wrong with this coin from the photos posted. A good close up of the mint mark is needed at the very least in order to make a fairly accurate assessment of the coins authenticity. if you are wondering if the coin appears to be cleaned, it is difficult to make that call also, as the photos make it look more like a clad quarter.
If you have the coin in hand and cannot tell send it to ANACS.
