OK votes are in and a total has been reached.
Voting resulted in:
Gold:Anoob Silver:Eng Bronze:Echizento....
Then with bonus points Eng would have topped the charts if it wasn't for Dwaynes re-entry...changing his coins allowed Anoob to acquire some with the first coin featuring Hercules. Further down is a coin which is listed as head of Hercules but I think incorrectly since it is Alex III deified wearing lionskin (as reference to Hercules but not actually Hercules)
I hope everyone agrees with my logic: and there seems some justice that those with most votes came out on top, but the bonus points served the cause of getting some varied entries and an interesting smackdown so I am pleased to say they served their purpose.
My particular favourites were Engs Phonecia Arados and Augustus's Entries... I don't know why I am such a sucker for Greek Silver ^^
A big thank you for all the rest of the coins, all interesting and some quite beautiful. I guess I hand over to the final victor Anoob. Well done ^^ sorry I can't stretch to a prize or I would throw out a few Solidus ^^

Great coins and great job to the winners. DavidUK I take that you are talking about my head of Hercules that was listed this way by a very reputable dealer, the same as many reference books, and wildwinds... http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/gree...r_III/t.html

Late again ! Oh well nothing would have changed ..... busy with the mundane things again. Listing my 'junk' entertaining guests and crazy gluing my cat back together again ! The bloodthirsty feline seems to have discovered that some creatures are not so easily dismembered. A million and one uses. I have glued broken denarii before ..... and now a cat. The cat was actually easier.

Yes indeed Dwayne...and I see all those coins listed as "Head of Herakles" but the story I came to believe was that Alex III was the first to put his image on a coin as he believed himself to be a god. To stop any outrage about it he draped his head with the lion skin as tribute to Herakles... This is attributed as being Alexander draped in lion skin yet it is clearly the same person as listed as "head of Herakles" It is interesting because we know and have found busts of Alex and know what he looks like, but clearly we have never seen Herakles in person. I am sure that its a debatable subject whether I look should look on the image as a deified Alex or as Herakles but I am convinced it is the former.

Yes the portraits are the same and yes I have heard that story. Is it Alex the great or is it Herakles... I don't know. But I will continue to list it as "head of Herakles", as my references list.

Herodotus names Perdiccas I as being the founder of the Macedonian ruling dynasty. Other (later) sources cite Caranus or Karanus (Greek: Κάρανος, 808"778 BC) one of the "Heracleidae" (sons of Herakles) as being the founder of the kingdom. Herakles is believed to 'belong' to the city of Tiryns and probably was an early King of "Tiryns of the Mighty Walls". Traditions of the bronze age even credit Herakles with sacking the city of Troy and killing off the entire ruling family excepting one Prince named Podarces (which changes to Priam) over the dispute for payment for killing a sea monster. He had been promised the famous immortal white horses which King Laomedon had received from Zeus. The Trojans were quite famous for their horses (in more ways than one !). The ancients believed these all to be real people (and so do I actually). Alexander III was exploiting a loophole ..... making use of the 'family resemblance' thing to put his face on the coinage. According to the rules of the time he was within his rights. The fact that an illustrious ancestor, namely Herakles bore such a close resemblance was ...... completely natural.
Investigating the history of the late bronze age is fascinating. Henry Schliemann believed that there was truth woven into and throughout these 'tales' and for the most part I believe he was right.
