Quote: I am considering cracking it, dipping it to brighten it up a bit and resubmitting it. It will come back in a PCGS no problem holder AU58. And I will get a good price when I sell. Right? Wrong. Maybe you get away with it, maybe you throw a couple hundred bucks worth of value down the tubes. The problem is not so much the skin on the coin - it's the fact that you're expecting the world to beat a path to your door on Thanksgiving. I wouldn't consider listing a coin on ebay until mid-January at this point - I've been burned too badly by trying to sell during the Christmas season over the years.

Hmmmmm . . . . . There goes SuperDave again. Making sense as usual. Actually I hadn't particularly considered seasonality. I suppose I could sit on it. Trouble is that I am an engineer by trade, a "Mad Scientist" of sorts. And a gunsmith. And an engine builder. It is so difficult for me not to tinker with things. I still haven't cracked it, but the temptation is soooo strong!

I feel you, man. Seriously, if you can possibly hold off on the sale, sit on it until after the New Year when collectors can turn their attention back to numismatics. What worries me most about a dip for this one is the darker stuff to the right of the date and the crud around the mint mark. The latter is a common thing with Washington quarters, and a knowledgeable collector will get it, but I don't see either of those things going away with a dip. That means they'll stand out like sore thumbs, and I don't know if the coin then survives in a "righteous" slab.

Not my intent to make this a "for sale" thread. Would like to focus on the coin. Thanks though.

Oh I know that Jon. Simply sayin. To the original point. After much thought I am coming down squarely on the side of leave it be. Its not the coin or the slab. Its simply the market at the moment as Dave was saying. Dave gets it right now and again. You know, blind squirrel and nuts.

I'm a bit late on this thread... So not much to add that hasn't been said.. But that I definitely wouldn't dip it. Also, regarding ANACS, I wouldn't crack it and resubmit at all. I actually like ANACS alot. Although I'm not a super fan of the new holders, but the old small white ANACS slabs are hands down my favorite.. And I will only send varieties and Morgan's to them, neither of the other top two. I find them to be pretty darn equal in grading with the other two, great (arguably the best) in attributing varieties and VAM's and attribute far more different varieties/VAM's than the others. The direct submittion without paid membership is awesome, and as well as the normal low prices they offer free grading and super deals through out the year. There comming up in the game and I really see no reason why anyone would pay more soley for a PCGS/NGC slab, I always buy the coin in it as I grade it, not what the slab say, whichever the company.. I would never pay more (or less) for a coin just because of the "house" it resides in...

Nathan, I submitted this coin to ANACS myself. I love their business model, and feel that the coin is graded fairly. If everyone felt the same as I do then everything in my collection would be in ANACS holders. I love the holders as well, though not a fan of the yellow labels. Reality sets in when time to sell. And my collection could not grow if I can't upgrade from time to time, as I do concentrate on one series. Washingtons for 45 years. Sadly, I have never been able to get top dollar for ANACS coins. Indeed, I look for ANACS coins when I buy as I know I can sometimes find a great deal on a great coin. So I suppose I like to buy ANACS, and sell the "other guys". Sorta sad . . . . . Tell me your experience is different, I am forever the optimist.

Also late into the thread but I really like that coin, checked out the listing looks like it already has a bid, never realized what a tough coin that was in high grades... I'll def be watching that listing :)

Yep, got a bid. I should have kept it off the Bay, as Dave suggested. Oh well, that is the game. It will not get cracked out (not by me anyway), and I will have a few bux. I would really have rather sold it to a particular person on this board, but my timing was off. As usual. Well, I suppose that just about settles the question . . . . .

Found one in a previously unknown (to me) coin shop in Texas. Online. But she's beautiful! MS62 That's why I needed to sell my original ANACS example, before the Missus finds out. My latest love:

Well, she's gone! I am going too miss her. But I by golly didn't dip her! Now I will still be wondering "What if?" She went to a forum member. So I know she is going to a good home! I already have my eye on a sexy 1940-D MS65 in a hot PCGS see-through outfit. Thanks to everyone who played along!
