1912 Nickel Key Date Problem.

It looks like an S to me VG-8 is not likely with the rim dings ?

I think its 1912 s after checking serval times to my 1912 d nickel. I just wanted to make sure. Reason why its so hard see the s on it. Its very old wore out nickel.

Its amazing the us mint onley minted 238,000 of them in 1912. I looked at my locol coin shops in houston and they never had any. I feel luckey I bought this one for what I bought it for. I looked at serval others on ebay before this one. Most the other coins for set I geting them for around buck per nickel.

My quastion is why those Liberty nickels sets 1883 thru 1912 not all Popular in collecting them ? Its seems very few coin shops even sell them. I have seen lots of other dealers on ebay try sell tons that stuff cheap. Complete sets going below bid on greysheat on ebay in last few monlths. Its like they are dead products out there. Key dates going super cheap compared 1913 thru 1938 nickels or other keys dates like in penny books, Mercury dime books such as 1916d, 1877 penny, 1909 svb penny, 1914d penny. You get the idea.

Why is that with the 1883 thru 1912 nickel book ?. I bought them since I finished my Jefferson nickel set and wanted to try to get complete run of nickels for last 125 years. I am scared to build the 1913 thru 1938 nickel run with prices like they are sometimes. I may try to build the nickel book before 1883 next. My goal is have one nickel set complete for last 150 years or so.

Susan, I love deciphering bad photos, as you did. I do it with major errors (and fake errors) all the time.

Bad photography from sellers and knowledge of photography (and photoshop) can lead to real bargains.

The Liberty nickel was not a coin that held up well in circulation that is why you see so many in grades g-4 to g-8. And the higher grades cost so much more people just can't afford them. I have three ms-60 Liberty nickels and in that grade they do look beautiful.

That's how I've found some great deals. I got an 1804 spiked chin Half Cent due to messing with bad pics for around $30 a few years back. I was then able to sell it for $110 on ebay.

Nice looking coin, the 1912-S is as you say a sleeper I do not have one you are very lucky thanks for the pictures.

It only took from 1892 until a few years ago for the Barber quarters to take off, and then a year more for the half dollars, perhaps soon the dimes will move and then the nickels.

I sure hope so. As I said it is a rather nice looking coin. I just don't understand the lack of interest, the amount of decent grades available, the lack of dealers carrying them, the excessively low value in even the Red Book. And if the Red Book shows low prices on anything, that is rare itself. I go to lots of coin shows and have been tempted to upgrade my 2 sets of those Nickels but the lack of interest makes me hesitate.
