Due I guess to the perceived rarity of both 2009 nickels and dimes many dealers sold rolls for $30 and up. I saw them sell out at small local coin shows at the time. All the major modern coin dealers did the same. Imagine all the rolls stashed away!

I have found 1 2009 P nickel in change. I'm not discouraged. Keep the faith!

Hopefully we can start by clarifying there is nothing rare about the 2009 circulation strike Jefferson nickels ...

There were 86,640,000 of these minted ... with the Denver mint leading the way with 46,800,000 examples.

These are normal circulation strike figure for the series prior to 1958 or so ... and as such I remain confused at all the hyperbole surrounding this coin.

Search enough rolls and you will find all the 2009 that you need ... geepers ... compare this task with finding a circulated 1950-D Jefferson ...

Encourage some patience to search enough rolls ... truly the 2009 will show up.

Ah.......such are the numismatic facts ......... here is the the situation in practice. Searched 3 more rolls of nickels from the family change jar last night, found a 1940, a 1941D and a 1937 F15 Buffalo, but after about 10 rolls per month for the last year and a half and an otherwise complete set of 1962 - 2013 Jefferson's, we still have not come across , not even one 2009 P or D nickels.

I've been looking since 2009 and have not found a P or D either. Also have only found one 2009 dime.I've had more luck finding ATB Quarters and 2009 commem pennies.

The 2009 circulation dimes and nickels are a real pain to find in change. I'm still watching for the 2009-D nickel, nada yet. But the mint set nickels look so much like circulation ones, so I am leaving those in the Whitman. I may switch out the mint set dimes, because they definitely do look different.

I heard, not sure if true, that even if 86+K were minted that many were held and not released into circulation so although they're made, they weren't released. This might just be a variation of the P.R. story. No idea. Did over a box a week ago and nothing as far as '09's

For what it's worth, I found 2 - 2009 Ps in about 120 rolls searched. May not be rare, but compared to nickels 2004 forward, the most elusive by far.

In about 20 boxes and numerous pocket change for the year of 2013, a total of the 2009 nickles found for me was:

3 P
1 D

I bet in about 10 years when some bank runs out they will be bags of the things that just ended up sitting around in some distribution center that wasn't sent out and anyone getting boxes will likely end up with a whole box of 2009 nickles.

I searched one full box of nickels from the Tampa area two years ago (2011)and found only 2 2009-P nickels. They were in pretty bad shape already but I saved them anyway. I have not found any in my change at any time. I see them (circulated) selling by the roll on ebay, but I have not tried getting one yet. I think they are coming from Puerto Rico. Seems like they got a lot of them.

I average 1 in every 5 rolls searched, mostly 2009D here in Texas. They do seem the least common to find of the modern business strike nickels.

I have yet to find any 2009 dimes or nickels in circulation. I do find P and D cents and quarters though. I ended up having to buy them off a member a while back. Say what you want but five years later and there still are not any in my area.

I am from Puerto Rico and there are very common I remember having many of them in my hands, but at that time 4 months ago I was starting to collect coins and ignored many factors that I have learned on this forum and in many pages dedicated to this.its the same case of Puerto Rico quarters, there's you can get many, are very common. Here in N. Y. I have not gotten any yet.
