These are a really good example of why Morgan aficionados like myself are so high on the early San Francisco issues - strike, die preparation and finish are top-notch and prototypical. Also, you see evidence of the (to me) character-building die polishing showing on a couple of the reverses.
I'm guessing you're flipping this set. It kind of depends on the group holder - I'd like to see the lucite, unless it's just an unlabeled generic piece of plastic. These are all rather plentiful in higher grade, and might not justify slabbing against your need for profit margin.

I've seen something like that before; hopefully someone can chime in with further information as to its' provenance. I'd lean towards keeping them in the plastic, especially if you can offer the individual photos as well.
Keep in mind, the term "SPL" is considered by the more discerning subset of collectors as a whimsical attempt to impart some undeserved "extra value" to a given coin by a less-sophisticated seller. "Semi-Prooflike" is kinda like "semi-pregnant."

I bought this set from a well known local collector, he bought the holder many years ago and then 1 by 1 put the set together from coin shows and such. He needed some extra cash this christmas so brought it in for me to buy. It is a cool set and I dont need to get the coins slabbed if I can make a few bucks on it as is. I'm a collector too, this week my collections is "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" and next week its "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" always rotating and revolving!
My specialty is rare forms of natural gold crystals and specimens and even those NONE are so sacred I cant sell them!

Very nice group of S mint Morgans. I see these coins going 64 to 65 + and one or two could be 63+ on a bad day for a grader and the 80 could have a run at 66 in my opinion. There is no reason to have any of these graded unless you have a desirable VAM with the 78 or an 80/79. Too bad that 82 isn't PL. Those are tough to come by compared to the other dates. That one still eludes me. |

I love the advice and knowledge on this forum, I am going to keep them in the holder they are in since I do have 3 slabbed 1880-S MS66 already, it would be a shape to bust this set up! Thanks for all the input!
