What makes it TWICE as nice is I found another one a few rolls later. I always figured that I would not get a 1938 from CRH and would have to break down and buy one. So when I read the date it was a gut punch, no joke it took my breath away, I sat there babbling like an idiot and pointing at it for about a minute.

Wait, are 1938's rare? I found about 20 of them.

But good find!

Congrats on a great find! I remember the first 1938 I found as a kid. I used to go through a lot of nickels looking for one. I could always find the 1939s (as I am sure everyone else can/could), but that 1938 was so elusive for me also.

When I found it I just could not believe my eyes.

I'm still shaking. my first 1938, and it's gorgeous.

And I love to read this kind of thing b/c it shows a collector who loves the coins for what they are

There is nothing wrong with someone who collects to make money, but getting a natural, gut reaction of excitement over a non-multi-hundred-dollar piece is just plain FUN!

Your find reminds me of finding a 1938 years ago - it's an AU coin that I almost passed over. I had gotten into the habit of looking for all the old, worn nickels so when I found mine, I changed my approach; look at the shiny new ones to!! Coin collecting must be a lot like golfing - you never forget a great shot (or find). Congrats on the nice find!

Thanks all, to tell the truth I said I was shaking due to the crummy pictures Always check them all, this one looked so good I might have thought it was mid 70's then it looked like a 58 for a second, then I scoped it then, no joke it took my breath away.

$520 in nickels since the start of the year and still no silver the hunt continues

Now I can blast through the rest of the rolls I have then start working on my camera set-up, or just get more rolls

Edit: OK that box was not bad, got a 1946 that was worn and too nasty to worry about a picture, but heck it's still the oldest I've found so far

Im in Afghanistan and I was in the bazaar buying souvenirs. There was this big bowl of old world coins, and the first American coin I've seen in many months was in it, a 1954 P wheat . I asked the shop keeper if he would throw this in with my other purchases, because it was only 1 cent!
