I'm having a blast putting together a Capped Bust Half date set 1807-1839. You can find nice looking VF-XF coins for a decent price. My collection is PCGS and NGC slabbed coins only. Only have 1807, 1813 and 1815 left. Also going for some of the major varieties.

I'm a Barber Half collector so I have an obvious bias, but I think the Barber Half series would be much more enjoyable. You can assemble a complete set in lower condition coins for under $2,000 and upgrade them over time to nice Fine and better. Bone of the coins in the set will cost over $150 in G- VG, and the vast majority can be found for under $20. Most dates can be obtained in VF condition for under $100.
The money trap comes when you start looking at XF to AU pieces, but they sure are nice.

If youre looking for a long term goal, I say Barbers.
If youre looking for a place holder until you continue work on your passion (Morgans) go with the Kennedys.
My one suggestion would be maybe meeting in the middle... I'm a huge fan and a collector of the Kennedy short set (1964-1970). Its small, affordable, but it also presents many challenges and some cool varieties.
Currently my energy in the set is focused on cameo proofs and SMS Kennedy short set halves. The accented hair is a nice variety and the SMS coins are very difficult in gem cameo.
One of these days I will add the business strikes which, surprisingly to most, can be VERY expensive in higher grades.

This is basically the conclusion I arrived at when thinking this over. I have to say that I think I made the right decision to go with the Kennedy half right now. I have the first four coins in the album, and I'm excited about the journey I'll take with this set. There are a LOT of dates/mint marks to obtain, and this is a good thing. Again, this endeavor is simply for the joy of assembling a complete set- the joy of coin collecting. I want to take my time with it. I hope to learn a lot. It begins........  Edited by Darth Morgan

I'd suggest that you get a couple of Whitman's like these and do a little CRH, make 2 sets, one in proof+ and one that is primarily CRH but also the cast-offs from the album when you get better for it. I have multiple dime and nickel folders and love the fact that after I get them both full I can make a better set by mix and match. As I hunt for silver and get disappointed I can get a smile by finding a hole filler, or an upgrade. Not only that but every piece here was purchased for face value  and there are some nice ones too  Key dates are always an issue and that accounts for some of the open holes, but no one ever said it was easy, but it is fun! |

Thanks jbuck and denco7 Like I said the silver is all from dad's and granddad's pockets from a few decades ago (I keep the silver finds out of the books, they are special) and some of the non silver in the first book are pocket change too, but I keep upgrading as I get better from CRH. The only D mint marks I'm missing are 1987 and 2003. I only started CRH about 9 months ago and have not done many halves, I'm starting to see halves in a better light now, my first few attempts at them were not encouraging but after 2 64's and a 65 in $150 I'm back on the half bandwagon |

How about CRH to get all the coins at face? Are you living in a city or a big town?
I've found all the Kennedys at face for Dansco 8166 except 1992 silver proof, 2007 silver proof, 2009-13 silver proof, and 2013 clad proof.

I'm in po-dunk no where there are no metropolis's in Montana.   I found a 2000-S clad and 4 silvers so far but I just ordered my first Full box of halves, they should be here by the end of next week  then we shall see...  I've been doing a few hundred at a time but never ordered a full box yet. |

It is the cheapest way to get those in BU condition that I have seen, at least on ebay. The clad and silver proofs will require extra care and scrutiny. I don't really want to buy proof sets just to get the Kennedy half, so more than likely I'll be purchasing those raw and in the best condition possible. I added a 70's decade set (P&D) to the album this week, along with a '64, a '66 SMS, and some late 70's proofs. So far, every coin in the album has been opened from OGP. Oh what fun this is. . . .    |
