I assumed melt for melt, but if it was for higher quality then that would not be the case.
Yeah, back then (1990's) those Franklin half dollars still had a numismatic value over melt. Not to mention, the dealer had to make some profit, right?

"My opinion" all the coin shops I deal when it comes to bullion grade junk silver I wont sell to a shop that does not pay spot. The ones I frequent all buy at spot. Most shops will put a spot plus sign up and that in my opinion is fair. Other things like mint sets proof sets or say ya found a rare coin my favorite coin shop will pay 75% of value. I think this is fair. And the guys are friendly and always pleasant to buy from. And if I want a really nice coin. They usually will make me a deal. But I support the shops that are fair as a buyer and seller after all is said and done my collection would not exist if it was not for coin shops. And I apply the same to ebay I compare the price of something to what the grey sheet says and then see what the premium for ebay sale is and dont have a problem throwing a little extra for that hard to find or whatever it may be. This to me is a hobby and a very enjoyable one and helps pass those long crazy days by. I enjoy the coin shop chats and envitably whenever I am in the store digging through whatever some fella will ask me what I am looking for or collecting. Just today a older gentleman sold a set of gsa hoard, amazing carson city Morgan dollars and those gems were right there to stare at and drool over. I love my local coin shops!

I've yet to actually see people melt silver coins but I have seen a person bringing in a large chunk of morgans and peace melted together from a fire. Also I see people buying 90% silver and morgans/peace and tell me they make coin jewelry out of them....slowly and slowly the 90% is being damaged or destroyed from natural disasters, etc that they will become even more valuable! To us that collect them.....yay!

Easy, buy them now and don't melt them at all.

There are many Silver half dollars out there, and I got a 90% Silver Washington quarter last week and my wife got a 90% Silver dime at a diner!

As far as a number of Silver coins still in circulation, who knows?

Now I don't have the numbers in front of me, but when I began searching, I took all silver that was made figured 95% was removed and decided it was still worth searching with the numbers I came up with. I haven't searched since 2011 because it became very difficult to order/dump coin, but I was still finding some silver, it dried up rather dramatically in my area the last 6 months I was searching.

Ind the end it wasn't cost effective to search anymore.

I would also be interested in knowing how many pre 1964 silver coins still exist today (not what is in circulation because that changes daily, but just what exists total). I heard a lot were melted in the 1980s but never found a stat with estimates of how much was melted. Were a lot of uncirculated coins melted down too because the spot price was so high?

Everybody has an axe to grind, but this seems to be minimally honest:

You can see the rotation from scrap to jewel coins bars and silverware

@rupester...you are very lucky to have a great LCS to shop at.

And as was mentioned it is not illegal to melt 90% silver coins.
But I am sad that people do.....unless it's to make a coin ring or something like that.

I don't think melting them would be a good idea. It wastes coins to the collectors, especially the ones they don't make anymore.
