I don't see the 1916 D. I think he means it had them but he took them out.

I only counted 50 Dimes

Why take that chance when you're $200 away from a slabbed legit 1916d based on the hammer

Very unclear auction which is characteristic of a new Seller or a scammer playing dumb.

If it does not have a 16-D in it, then the item is clearly SNAD and warrants a return and refund. I hope the buyer paid with a CC as a funding source for added protection.

I once bought a set of Buffalo nickels a long time ago on ebay from a new Seller. It was advertised as complete with 3 legger but no 16/16 or 18 over 17. I calculated my max bid taking into acct the 3 legger was bad. It was. The real money was in all the higher grade coins from 1913 to 1929 .... A lot of those were XF and higher. I did ok and never said a thing about the shaved leg 3 legger to the Seller.

Ya just never know.

I haven't paid yet. I sent the seller a message asking for clarification.

Let us know how it turns out. Either way not a good idea to get the 16-D raw off of ebay, it's one of the most faked ones out there. I researched this one for a long time and almost bit a few times on ebay, but in the end got one somewhere else. I got mine raw but from a nationally known trusted dealer - I'd do the same or get one certified if from someone not known. Just my 10 cents...

100% do not pay. Read his one sale and one other item for sale they both list the missing coins. The fact they state almost complete had 57 including 1916 and 16 d and now has 55 coins is definitely a scam. But protected by the wording. Not woth the risk and complain not to get negative feedback.

There will not be a fake 16 d in that lot. The wording was put in a way specifically to not be illegal. Again read his one feedback and one item for sale. The sold item went for 12 x face and listed the missing quarters . The item for sal book 2 of Lincoln cents for $20. Worth $5.00 but who cares. The one your talking about has $80.00 worth of silver but do to his clever wording went fo4 x that. And completely different but close wording. And not illegal.

The conclusion..

The seller verified that there is a 16S but no 16D, apologized for the confusion and agreed to cancel the transaction. I'm positive it was an honest mistake/typo rather than a scam or intent to deceive. I had to explain where to find the "letters" on the coin, so I doubt the seller even knows the key dates or the true value of the collection.

Glad that you didn't lose any money on the deal and that he was decent about the transaction. Good for you for giving him the benefit of the doubt.

But he knew enough to "call out" the 1916D, so I doubt he was as naive as he profess'

Good on the seller for taking care of you. I hate to have to put it this way, though, but 15 seconds of research (that's what it took me) would have shown you that the second slot in that album is for the "D." This is numismatics. Knowledge is king, and you probably wouldn't have had a realistic SNAD because of how the seller worded the auction. Maybe, but it would have been a battle if the seller had stood their ground.

In the future you should email the seller and ask to clarify exactly what coins you will be bidding on. just be real polite and as long as they are not trying to scam you they will gladly provide you with the dates and mm's and if they are trying to scam you you will just either never hear back from them or try to avoid answering the questions with excuses(and if they lie about it you just contact ebay and get a refund). in those cases it's always better to err on caution especially with larger amounts of money and possible key dates being in the lot.
I'm really really happy that the seller agreed to cancel the transaction, that was very honest of them.Plus, even if the coin was a "1916 d" Mercury dime their are more fakes(altered dates/mintmark or straight up fakes) than real ones out there.

Remember that the 16D Mercury dime is one of the most counterfeited coins on Earth. Even if there was one in that set, chances are it would be a fake. And too since the photos are so bad, even the 21 and 21D may not be any good. All to much of a chance with ebay and uncertified coins.

I did, and 15 seconds of research showed me that the second slot in that album can also be for the "S".
