I have said this before, but I wish this could have been a collector only series, made in the same fashion as the Morgan dollar- 90% silver and 38.1 mm diameter. That would have been pretty cool, I think. I would definitely be collecting these if this were the case.

Maybe they would also give more attention to the portraits being used. Truth be told, if they were not included in the proof sets, I might not really care to build the album.

The saddest part about this series is that for all the r&d money the mint spends no one thought to say "lets change the color, these look horrendous when they circulate"

The color is sort of dictated, though, by the need to differentiate them from Quarters and the limits of the alloy. Even a different color, I often find myself (I carry Presidential dollars a lot) absentmindedly about to give them out as Quarters.

Quote: The color is sort of dictated, though, by the need to differentiate them from Quarters Just think, we might not have this problem if the smaller Twenty Cent coin had replaced the quarter. It would also make it easier to eliminate the nickel.

I don't have that problem with the Pres and Sacs, but I have actually given SBAs as quarters a number of times. The truly was the worst possible design they could have done for that dollar. And we lost Ikes for that junk. smh

Yeah, leaving the 38mm model for Dollars was the worst decision they could have made.

Maybe he is complaining more about the obverse design change than the size. Hmm... Baby Eise nhower dollars... Golden baby Eise nhower dollars... Hmm...

I do agree silver probably wouldnt have been a great color either with the quarter size similarity even though the silver plated ones usually look pretty great to me. There had to have been a better color though. It turns such a disgusting greyish brown thing. I dont even know what to call it. Id actually take a black coin over that or red like cents. Or just make them a little bigger to differentiate them. maybe bring back the SBA edges. There had to have been some better option in their research data.

It's been a while since I've read this seeing as I forgot to subscribe to the topic. Interesting discussion. Loonies/Toonies actually look better than the dollar coins we have now.
Dale U, do you just buy each president from the mint, or what? My problem is I want just one of each, doesn't even have to be BU, just not ugly. I don't want to have to go through the effort/cost of buying an entire roll just to get one (especially when business strikes are totally fine).

Dollar coins work great in all the self serve checkout stations in all the major store chains I've tried. Even at Home Depot. They work in my parking meters downtown. The color changing issue was dealt with at the mint a few years after the Sacs came out in 2000. The manganese was turning darker too quickly. For an experiment I have cleaned a few with brass cleaner to see how that brings back the shine. I gave two dollar coins as a tip yesterday and they seemed pleased.

Duncan, I have my bank order A roll of each when the mint has them for sale, Then they let me buy the whole roll at face value, I just don't know if I am going to get P or D. But I really don't care, If you are missing any, Let me know, As I know I have at least 15 or 20 of each coin up through 2013.

I would but to buy/sell/trade you don't have enough posts.
That's interesting though that a bank can buy a roll for collectors only and then you can get it at FV. I might try that.

When I began, and before I got my first box, they asked if I wanted circulated or uncirculated coins ordered at one bank. I was confused and just told them.. whatever comes int he box. I might have to see If my bank can order them as rolls or if they were just checking to be able to tell me "We cannot get rolls of uncirculated coins."
