Just a suggestion, order 4 $250 boxes of the new presidential or NA dollars from the mint. They are $276 a box. The premium would be $26 per box, plus $5 for S&H for a total of $109. You could spend a lot of that on multiple trips all over the place going back and forth to banks trying to find $1000 in golden dollars.

I think this is a great suggestion, and then all 1000 coins would be new, gleaming, and golden! I say go with this.

Dude, the reality is you are one of the only people in the known universe that can actually get bags of Ikes anymore.

Domain- I'm not jealous of you at all. I promise. I'm not lying.

TomOhio,

My credit union has around $2000 worth. At least that's what they told me the last time I asked for Ikes and Kennedys. I would love to help you out, but I would be afraid to ship $1000 in coins. It would definitely have to be sent registered. I can call them on Monday and ask if they still have them.

EDIT: I still think the best route is buying the boxes from the mint. Like I said, you know that every coin you get will be new and untouched.

The bank I work with at work says they can not get me boxes of halves because they are not made for circulation anymore, yet they have tons of Pres and will order them. THAT is a bank now wanting to deal with customers ordering coins. Like Capital One.

Entirely possible. Some banks do get their coins from a 3rd party though instead of from the fed who may not have the halfs. There really are some banks that couldnt order them or it would cost them enough they refuse too, but there are others who are just being lazy and dont want to order them.

basebal,I can order halves from all the other banks except Capital One. They just flat out refuse to do it. As a company. I really do NOT like that company.

I had never heard the not made for circulation excuse for Kennedys before this other bank. This came from outside the branch. The head teller had no problem at all trying to place the order.

DarthMorgan: Thanks for checking with your credit union. When you said they had 1000, did you mean Ikes or Presidential dollars? I'm considering the suggestion of biting the bullet for about 100 bucks in premium over face plus shipping and buy Presidentials from the mint, as it's "the best bad idea" so far. I appreciate you checking on this. Looking forward to hearing from you again. Tom

I'm on the newer side of CRH. When I first started, I'd go to the bank and ask for halves and most of the time get a weird look or a few that they had in the til. I took the suggestion of calling a few of the bigger branches in the area to see if I could find one that would order or had some in stock.. I hit on the first call and now I just call a head and they have them ready for pick-up when I want them...

In my original hunt for halves- I'd usually be told either "we have none, but we have dollar coins or 2 dollar bills"... this was a regular theme at Bank of America... maybe check with the branch in your area.

Are there really banks that refuse to stock the small $1 coins? My old bank (BoA) was required to keep at least a full $1000 box in the vault at all times. Maybe things have changed since I stopped actively hunting, but I have a hard time believing that *any* bank legitimately cannot order dollar coins. Granted, you have to accept whatever comes your way, but it should be possible to get them at face value from any major bank.

They were Presidential dollars. Believe me, if they had been Ikes I would have snatched them up.
I just tried calling my bank, but no one is answering. I just get the "answering" message. I think they may be closed due to the weather. We just got our share of snow and ice. I will try again tomorrow and let you know.

I deal with 5 different banks in my area. Used to deal with more. And I well know what is ment by not allowed to mess with special requests and/or orders for coioage of any kind. One branch bank of BOA tells me they will save them for me if they come in and I'm around at the time. BUT they are not allowed to phone me about this. None of the banks will place orders for coins anymore for anyone that does not have a buisness that requires coins such as a laundromat or store.
If you find this to be true in your area, you can thank the rolls searchers. They have been getting many rolls of coins, looking though them, returning to the same banks. At one bank they told me some people do this almost daily. Then too are those that return short rolls. Meaning a coin or two short on every roll.
Almost all banks around me have now gone to when you bring in coins, they send out somewhere for counting. The total is placed in your account. No Account? No problem. They just send you a check. Cost? Of course. Now you pay for this service and if sent a check, additional cost to you.
Again, you can thank those roll searchers for messing things up.
As to those Ikd dollar coins. IF you go to a coin show and explain to dealers, you may find one that will sell you a lot of them for a bit over face.

TomOhio,

I just called my CU, and they said they sold the Presidential dollars they had on hand. I wonder if it was a roll searcher looking for errors? Still, I think that there would have been a lot of horrible looking coins in that group. I think you'll be glad you ordered from the mint once you get those boxes in. If you do, please take some pictures.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. And thanks to Darth for checking on the CU. Guess I'm stuck with ordering from the mint. Gawd, I hate giving the government that premium. Oh, well.

I'll post a picture of the treasure box with the coins when I complete it this fall.
