This might make it into an XF details holder with a TPG but I'm also going VF30 Details.

either 25 or 30 but I'm leaning towards a solid 25

Many thanks for you opinions.
Would be great if this coin would grade cleanly, but I guess the edge bump and reverse abrasions do not allow it. It is very, very difficult to find early copper, specially pre-1800 dates without some sort of impediment.

Net VF with the rim bump clear wear. Attractive still, IMO. Like the surfaces and bet the color is attractive. Too bad about the bump.

Tough call. I rather expect a little latitude from the TPG's for a coin so scarce that Joseph Mickley actually restruck them decades later to meet collector demand (a few were done in silver, if money is no object to you). I don't think there is a Mint State 1823/2 known, although I could be wrong. In truth, I think this one might get a pass, and a clear slab. That would make it a $1000+ coin.

In the last CQR by Robinson, this is his scarcity data. 5 are known of in MS60, 2 are known of in AU55, 3 are known of in AU50, 4 are known of in XF40, 7 are known of in VF35, and 5 are known of in VF30. This is a scarce coin for sure. Coins in VF20 and lower are more common but once you get to VF30 you will not find them as they are held by strong hands.

Thank you for the additional comments and interesting info Dave and 1893s. I hope as well that this coin will grade cleanly, but if not, it will stay 'as is' (the way most early copper purists prefer copper should be kept).
