What are the red flags? I would never purchase a 1916D raw because I do not have the experience to do so but am interested to know what you see as flags in this coin.

Thanks!

Lots of bids if fake, lots of suckers. Just can't see why anyone would have this and not have it authenticated. In that grade would pull a small fortune if graded and authenticated. I wonder if this one is real.

It's a beauty that's for sure. Almost too good to be true though. Spooky.

The D doesn't look right - does it? Also the surfaces seem a little grainy - my "mint" mercurys are pretty smooth (from the 30's and 40's anyway :-)

Amazing that folks would bid 4 figures on this based on the seller's newness and lack of authentication even though it is the key date.

Love his reassuring statement:

"This coin has been examined by a coin expert to represent the facts I have listed"

Phew, an unknown coin expert has examined the coin, now I feel all fuzzy and warm inside.

My thinking is, the guy is brand new to ebay (one month), doesn't take Paypal as payment, had coin examined by ˝coin expert˝ with no paperwork as proof, only sold one other item as seller on ebay, and doesn't take returns. To my understanding, Denver used only 4 separate dies to manufacture this coin, it appears to have a lot more of variences (IMHO) compared to authentic examples we researched on this one. It just doesn't look right to me. As far as diagnostics are concerned, raised die marks on known examples are not showing up anywhere on this one. Just saying...

Hello! I do not mean to nag but on the coin, what were the details that were the red flag?

I'm with Kelly and going further also would never buy a 16D that wasn't certified. But as a rookie that coin looked good to me - what was the signal that something was wrong?

Kelly I won't answer for anyone else but for me the rims looked deep and cast struck, if that's even proper terminology.

Well stated, dsfreeworld.

The inner area of the D should be triangular in shape and not look more like a half-moon, as on the subject piece.
