I think it's mid AU, the toes are intact and the head is strong.
The picture looks as though it does not have original surfaces and the pic is probably accurate.
It always freaks me out when high grade coins are cleaned, "why did they do that"?
Not that I wouldn't want it because I would, after all I do see the 'd'

Upon studying it, it may have been very dark based on the residue on the stars, rim and thigh.

I agree that it likely has been cleaned. The question is how bad. Hard to tell from the scans. I paid $75 for it, so it seemed worth. the risk at the au level

I lean towards an EF-45. The pictures seem to suggest a cleaning but it's tricky to tell for sure.

Overly dipped. No better than XF-45 details.

It's always a tough call from scanned images but you my be pleasantly surprised when you receive this. I'd say low AU details with surfaces tbd.

Defiantly au cleaned. I have to say based on the traces of black gunk on this specimen I would have cleaned it too. I have had coins in the past that we're basically worthless without being cleaned. I know there are die hard never clean a coin but if no one will buy it as is sometimes you do what you have to just like this. If it was covered in that black stuff Johnny might have passed right by it.

I received the coin. I had my expectations low, expecting a harshly cleaned coin....and was therefore pleasantly surprised. I believe the coin has been recently professionally dipped....meaning it was definitely dipped, but done in a way without killing the luster or making the surfaces look unnatural(other than the white look). The coin does not have excessive parallel hairlines, or the "glossy" look of a polished/scrubbed coin. I think it has a decent chance of making it into a righteous TPG slab. I would grade it AU-50. It has the luster to go 53+(strong cartwheel affect on both sides), but too much wear on the leg, breast face and reverse eagle breast and wing.
