Temptation can be strong when you are young. I would be fair but very firm in that if it ever happens again(and let her know you will be checking from now on and follow through with it) you won't be her coin buddy anymore and you'll inform her mom and dad. if she loves coins so much she is willing to steal them she has a lot of potential as a future coin collector. bmanofnbc,   well said. |

Well I guess I should point out that last summer when I was going through chemo Sharlee offered to spend the whole summer with us to take care of me. Of course I declined. But she has always been a great kid and we are very close. She knows there is nothing I wouldn't do for her including give her any coins I have.

This is something that you will share with her for a lifetime. I have strong memories of going through coins with my father as a child and I believe my son will have strong memories after I am gone. You have a great "Remember when you..." story for Sharlee. |

12 years old is old enough to know what's right from wrong. I'd sure keep her away from my collection!

I have a 2yo granddaughter that just loves to watch me mess with my coins. She is real partial to the silver dollars. Sounds so funny when she says it. She is most definetly up for a grab and run when she sees them. Kids you gotta love em. |

Women get half? You guys get to keep half your paycheck? My wife gives me a small allowance every 2 weeks. One time it's for me. The next time it's to buy her something nice.

Ooh! Creative little one when it comes to finding an excuse isn't she? Yes, she definitely sounds like a nice girl for her offering to come take care of you. And it sure sounds like you love her. But who knows how far her, obviously intelligent and resourceful, mind will get her into trouble if the lesson of right and wrong is not taught at this tender age? In the same circumstance I know I would have ended up giving her the coins also, but she would have had to apologize not knowing she was going to get them, and then have to properly ask me for them (how can we older guys little refuse kids?). It brings them closer to you this way, helps instill in them something to help them later in life, and is win/win (former teacher in me showing I guess). |
