Those early mint sets are flipping neat! The LCS owner I got the proof sets from had some he was holding for a customer. He let me look t them. That was the first time I ever saw one.
And I am going to look into getting some of those British and New Zealand proof sets. I rather like those!

susuman - Do NOT remove the coins or the tarnish. There can and is significant premiums on original, mint set toned coins. As in....5 to 20x normal retail.

I think that the RedBook value on the 1947 mint set is something like $1,400 - 1,500. The question here is if I should store the coins separately in flips along with the packaging. The coins are quite loose and can practically fall out as they are, so there is not really an issue with their removal. I have actually noticed that the cardboard coil holders in the 1947 set are thinner than the later year mint sets and do not seem to hold the coins very well. Absolutely, they would not be cleaned, however, I also do not want them to get to the point where they are environmentally damaged. The most important thing is to find the Philadelphia card.... |

I was getting ready to post that the 1947 mint set was most likely worth more than the property in Detroit currently is but according to Google maps streetview it is now an "upscale" area with all of the homes replaces by condos and fancy ground level shopping with condo's above buildings.

I never actually thought to look up the streetview image of the address on Google. This building, which is the old Orchestra Hall in Detroit, was where my grandfathers office was for many years. I have found many other addressed items that he received and they were sent to all manner of addresses of friends and relatives. I suspect that he was trying not to have too much numismatic stuff delivered to his residence out of fear of being a target..... There was a robbery attempt from home of his coins a few years before this. I believe that parts of the collection were dumped in the back yard and ultimately I don't think anything was missing (probably too heavy - I can't lift the part of it that I have even now).

Now this is a great thread! If I may...i have been assembling the the pre 55 proof coins and my budget screams one or two at a rime and so far I have complete to 1953 I have 1952 half and 1950 quarter dime wise only need the 1950 dime I got really lucky with the nickels but need 1950-53 this is my quarter the "scratch was actually a eyelid hair.. When I seen that image I got scared but its not on the coin  Edited by rupester

For franklins I need 1950,51,56 type 1 to have a complete franklin collection

Rupester, That is a really nice looking quarter. Is that in a Dansco album? If so,   . By the way, I would love to see some other sets, both U.S. and Workd I will move a little older with the packaged proofs. Below is an original 10-pack of 1942 Proof Cents. These are in the same plastic as the full proof sets and wrapped in the same tissue. I do not know if they came in a similar box or how they were shipped. My guess is that there are not many of these unbroken packs left - I have not seen them aside from what I have.   Two 1942 Proof sets (single nickel versions) in original packaging. Unfortunately I do not have the boxes.  |

I guess nobody likes me  Just kidding  . Anyway, it would be really neat and I am sure that there are some pretty interesting things that the CCF members have. Do you think it would be best in a days of thread (supported by Moe of course), start a new topic, or continue this one? Either way, I'll post something else tomorrow  |

This is kind of a repeat of my post with 1942 proof coins, except this is 1940. I don't have a 1941 set yet, but it is on the list. 10-pack of 1940 proof cents.   Two 1940 proof sets in their original mint plastic. Unfortunately, again, I don't have the shipping boxes.  When there is a thread specifically for old proof sets, I will try to post more complete photos with all the coins. |
