I only have 2 struck through die caps. Both are Lincolns. My 1980 was struck through a very late stage (thinnest) die cap. The edge is normal. The other one is a 2000 struck through late stage die cap, and it also has a partial collar error. I asked, but never really got an answer of whether or not it is common. I was just trying to figure out if a capped die has anything to do with the coin not being struck fully in collar. Just wondering if the two errors are coupled together often?

First time I've noticed this for me. But most of the ones I've seen don't show the edge of the coins.

Given that a capped die by definition involves two stacked planchets, I've no trouble believing that many will display a railroad rim.

What does the coin weigh? Is it normal weight or heavier?

Except the cap is the one that is not fully in the collar. The coin being struck through the cap (The OP coin) IS typically fully seated in the collar. In this case both the cap and the OP coin were not in the collar (Cap completley out of the collar and the OP coin partially out of the collar.

So is this a copper planchet or zinc?

Too light if it is copper.
Heavy if it is zinc.
I see 198? For date.

Far as I can tell its copper, no zinc showing anywhere. 198x is about all I can make out.

It does look copper, IMO.

FWIW, I sold a 1969 cent with the same error combination, in a little better condition a while back, for less than $10! Goes to show how risky ebay can be sometimes. Someone got a good deal!
