A Teller at my bank said she took a half hour explaining to an old guy that he would get more money taking his Morgan's and Peace's to the coin shop, she could only give him a buck a piece.

And then you DO have your people who just don't care, and just want that face-value money in their account, and now!

It's not at all unusual. Some banks will not allow employees to purchase any kind of koin off the line, and policy dictates they educate customers on collectibles, and refuse deposit.

Otoh, only heaven knows why one would volunteer that they were "looking for silver".

I read the OP as the teller telling the customers to look for silver if they're cashing in halves/dollars because the ethically know that a the coin it worth much more than a dollar.

Usually, the only time ethics are involved is when bank policy prevents tellers from sniping silver for themselves.

As a roll hunter for many years, I have learned to never give any education to tellers regarding my silver hunting exploits, especially new tellers. It's the fastest way to see your finds dry up.

i visit a lot of banks with my hobby, when tellers ask me if I am turning in my collection while I am dumping, they are thinking they will search them for silver, never did they say if you have silver take to a coin shop or pawn shop, I had a teller tear open my half rolls right in front of me before he paid me for my dump searching for silver, said he was checking them, yea for silver,, and also like (fistfulofdirt) stated I dont like to release any info, they ask did you find anything I say na, but wife drops for me and she will spill the beans,,lol

When I ordered a box of halves from my bank I was totally upfront with them. I told them I was a coin collector (not a silver hoarder) and just wanted to try and build a set of Kennedy halves for my collection. They were more than happy to help, though of course I was just interested in one box and don't plan on doing it every week (I'll probably order a box every couple of months to ferret out additional circulated proofs and NIFC I still need). I actually went to the bank manager first and she took me to the teller. Both were very pleasant and the teller said she could order for me any time I wanted.

I totally agree with iontyre, I am upfront and honest when I open an account I tell them I am a coin collector not just looking for silver. They said they would order boxes every week and they even call me when a bag of coins is available from the coin counter.

Very nice and a pleasure to do business with them.

Other branches of the same bank refused and I do not bank there.

When my wife worked at a particular bank branch, a manager competed with her for silver. The manager trained new tellers to save her silver. I always thought that was a sketchy move.

I told him I was, and he said that if anyone cashes in their half dollars they tell them to look for the silvers, before they cash them. I have never heard of this before, is this weird?

Not only do I not find it weird, I find it refreshing.

I agree. Even though we all often get our best finds from ignorance, imagine being on the opposite end! If you had something that was worth 14x what you were selling it for, wouldn't it be nice if someone along the way was honest with you?

The banks I have HAVE collectors that search for silver, yet 1 of them doesn't let them have rolls she gets in her tray as head teller and vault person/ money orderer. she saves what she gets for me or others that want rolls. they have to find it in their own tray.

i often get thing like "you should keep this" when spending halves. people are doing it lately now that I have started spending all the bicent's I have kept from boxes. I have to keep telling them I have several 1000 half dollars and the ones I am spending are ones I no longer want in my collection. it is nice some people out there know some coins have value and try to help others, but I wouldnt do it unless it was a kid. an adult should have already learned about money, and like me; if they have it and want to spend it or deposit it then dont waste their time and just take MY MONEY.. I mean it.
