XF-45, the PVC issue on the coin needs to be addressed or it will cause irreversible damage.

I think it would grade AU-50 but as the previous posters said, it has a PVC issue. Also it's a C-1, R-1, you'll notice the die lines to the right of the date and the leaf to the right of the S in STATES.
By the way, I'm sure you already know this, but your family has put away some very nice coins.

Nice EF 45 and I agree - an acetone bath would help.

AU 53. Acetone for sure. I would consider some Verdi Care too. Nice coin!

Thank you all for your insights on this coin and the others that I posted. The 3 US coins were all found together in an old coin purse (leather with a metal hinged top) where they had probably been for a long time. A couple other coins in this purse were two US 1 dollar gold pieces. I don't believe that any were ever in a PVC holder, so the greenish stuff on the 1/2 cent is due not to such but rather to something in the leather perhaps. The Lesher probably came down through the family because a relative at the time was a member of the populist party in Colorado (the party of silver). Regarding the Acetone wash, how long? Any gentle rubbing with cotton allowed?

BTW, although I collected coins when younger, most of my focus during adulthood has been on shiny things like this: But then, these few coins have got me thinking about coins for the first time in years. I guess I like anything old and interesting.

I agree with AU50 and strongly urge that you give this piece an acetone bath. Green is bad on copper no matter what the source is/was. Follow up with a verdicare dip and please remember not to rub the coin during any of these steps should you choose to do so.

For this coin, soak in pure acetone (not fingernail polish, it has impurities)for half-hour to an hour or so. NO rubbing. Rubbing a coin will destroy its value by creating hairline scratches that penetrate the natural protective patina of the coin. Or worse, rubs the patina off entirely. Very cool story about where the coin was found! My wife is usually the one that likes purses, but I want one like one like yours!

Top view of very old coin purse. Latched metal cover over a small leather pouch.

Here it is again ANACS graded. I'm very pleased with how it turned out and with the service.
