everything pre 1960.

everything foreign.

everything that I feel might be an upgrade to my collection.

When I accumulate 20 rolls of pre 60's, I sell them off at a small profit.

I don't hoard them, but I will keep them and profit from them when I can. It's how I'm able to pay for my collecting habit.

I won't sell a silver nickel for $1 on ebay with free shipping.... but I will sell 20 of them for $20 with free shipping.

I keep em all! Yes, I know they arent making me money, but they will always have a 5 cent value. I hopefully await for a composition change and removal of 1 cent coins. We cannot keep this silliness up.

How do I sort mine out? Like this;
2009 and War Nickels go into the plastic holder tubes. Buffaloes and older go into a little plastic bin. The pre 1960 go into a larger bin. The rest go into a 5 gallon bucket.

What's the point in keeping them if all you're going to do is just toss them into a bucket! Not even to ever pull them back out some Sunday morning and look at the great coins you found! You got poor ol' Felix tossing and turning in his grave!

But anyway, I keep most pre-'60s, like the most of the few CRHers out there, but I do keep some more attractive '60s, '61s, '62s and '63s; i.e. (the ones where you can see the steps.) I once managed to find a AU-58 (maybe 59!) '63-P Jefferson, as one could imagine, I wrapped that sucker up as soon as I found it!

Since I started this thread last year, we have changed our criteria for keeping nickels to:

liberty
buffalo
silver
mintage under 10 million

We were getting too many of the 1946s and 1948s, so we quit keeping them along with the 1942d. Now when we get a keeper, it's a real find.

About the same plan here Jon, but I do keep higher grade-higher mintage specimens occasionally and my cut off is about the 20 Million mark. Still trying to build out rolls for yy/mm.

That said, I've been going through the years and releasing the less desirable coins. Lightening the load while improving the quality. Happy hunting!

I keep pre-1965 (just a personal preference), 2009's and any foreign coins that sneak in the rolls.

I keep the 1960 or older. The best 4 examples

This weekend I found 1940 P+D+S in the same box (not the same roll) - I'm in Denver, so I find lots of D mint coins in great shape.

Pre-60.
Anything rare.
Westward nickels are nice as well, more just the struggle to find them than their actual worth or non-sentimental importance.
