Here's a dissenting opinion for the 1807, for the reasons Joe2007 gives very clearly. It's just a much better, and much less common, coin.
However, if you are going for conventional good looks alone, for example for a uniform appearance in the album - the 1804 is "easier to love". It has a nice strike and a solid look. I believe it has been cleaned and retoned, if that is an issue.

I vote the 1804 because the color is much better IMO than the other one.

Thanks for the opinions all! This is a tough decision, and I hear and relate to all of your comments. I think the 1807 is a much more valuable coin, but as far as eye appeal in the type set, they are on equal ground. I think if I can get the 1807 graded correctly, it would bring far more at auction.....I know some of you may disagree, but I personally think the 1807 should grade between AU58 and MS62. All of the yellow shimmery areas on the obverse field and liberty's face are die flow lines and original mint luster. I believe this coin has barely circulated if at all....but the strike is just so messed up. The 1804 may have been cleaned, but I do think it shows nicely some original mint red around the devices. It would probably be better for the type set, since I think the 1807 would do better in a high grade slab if, if they don't net grade it due to the strike weakness. I am thinking I will send it into ANACS, to get a second opinion. I wish I could borrow the best attributes of both coins, and merge them into one....  Edited by johnny54321

1807 is more "interesting" the 1804 would probably fit better into a type set album. I'd rather the 1807 was in my collection personally.

I decided to send the 1807 to ANACS to be graded. When I bought this coin, it was in an old small white ANACS VF-20 holder!! VF20? Are you crazy? Anyways, the reason I bought it was I felt it was ridiculously undergraded, and the real grade was clearly overshadowed by the strike weaknesses. Even still, how could they have given it a 20 with all that mint luster engulfing the surfaces? I thought it was nuts...so trying again fresh....so how will it fair this time?

In terms of the 7070, I would go with the 1804, but personally I like the 1807 better. I agree that the 1804 might have been cleaned long ago. I'm out of my element in grading weakly struck coins, but it certainly looks like a high circulated grade. According to my ANA Official Grading Standards book, the 1807 is often "weak at the borders, with no obverse dentils showing. Hair is often weakly struck." Since that's not to be confused with actual wear it's tough to grade. Good luck with ANACS, definitely post pics of its new slabbed home and let us know the grade! |

I think I'm starting to like the 1807 better, even though I originally said the 1804. Let us know when you hear back from ANACS. Also, why ANACS vs. PCGS or NGC? Not trying to hijack the thread and start a long debate, just asking your opinion in this case.

The VF20 grade on the 1807 was likely because they knew that was not original mint luster on a 210 year-old copper. It was probably net graded 5 or 10 points for a cleaning that bought out the shine.
In my eyes the 1804 is a far better coin.

Im very disappointed at ANACS grade of the 1807. They said VF35 cleaned....it just doesn't add up to me. I dont see how it is not original mint luster, the die flow lines are there, and it is clearly better than a VF35 detail wise. I will probably crack it out and put it in my type set....and maybe put the 1804 up for sale.

The 1804 is up on ebay auction right now....ending in about 12 hours and currently at a very low price....I hope I get some more bidding action! |
