That is a die crack and yes it runs over the "I". This happens because the die is cracked leaving a negative of this on the die. The negative is turned into a positive on a coin. So it would be raised.

On die scratches/gouges, these will show in the fields and will not show on the devices. This is because the outside part of the die (The fields) gets polished and leaves these die scratches on the fields. The devices are deeper into the die and are not usually affected by die polishing. Thus a die scratch looks like it went behind the device.

Technically it is not a "transitional"
A Transitional Error occurs when a coin is
struck on a planchet from a previous year with different metal composition.
It is a die variety. In this case a reverse die variety.

A 1983 copper cent would be a great example.
So many of them out there

I wondered about 1983 coppers, but to be honest, I haven't been checking. Not to hijack the thread, but are they really that common?

Yes, organization is important. I find that I don't have time to go through the variety prospects I set aside and sometimes things get mixed and confusing. I try not to think of what I might have released back into the wild. Ugh!!

So far, nothing significant...that I know of.
