What I am referring to are the obsolete chartered banknotes. A remainder I thought was a note that was not issued to the general public and typically not signed. But I recently bought a chartered banknote that I am hoping is not a remainder as they are worth considerably less than the others.

Yes.. typically when a bank folded or was amalgamated with another bank there were cases where they had notes that hadn't been issued...
Because of this most of the notes are expected to be in very high grades as they never saw circulation...
Pics would help... let's see the note!!

(Crap I'm making too many dumb jokes on this thread... and for that I appologise.. but I'm certainly looking forward to seeing some cool chartered notes!)

I don't have a single chartered note- I read about them in the CanCoinNewspaper..I don't have any earlier than 1937..No 2.oo(1928)or 1935 1.oo that were found inside of wallet..What a great find that would be..I think my Jokes are crazey as well..

I collect "Bank of Canada" banknotes 1935 to date.. Chartered banknotes are a whole other world that I haven't explored, yet. Edited by twoplustwo

My collection of chartered notes started with getting BMO chartered notes... then it went into trying to get at least one bank that amalgamated into the BMO.... I'm not going to lie... I actually didn't enjoy.. so I sold most of those notes and started on a new little passion of mine... Chartered bank notes with barn animals on them.... It seriously limits me so I don't get as carried away.... (I say that but meanwhile I have a standing bid on a $10 N.S. note from 1935 that for some reason it just spoke to me and I really like)

One of these days I will buy a 1935 $1.oo note...And I am not really interested to own any older (I don't count shinplasters as a note)..The 25c notes are an oddity to me-I enjoy them,..I have 4 or 5 fine or good 25cent notes..There is different letters on bill front to collect here ..(mine are B,J,K, not sure the others)The higher 1935 denom. notes I would say are out of my price range..  two Plus I like to hear what others collect.. Personally, I would like to own $1, $2 and $5 1935 notes in both the English and French versions. So far I have both $1 in VF30. The $2's I have but the French one is not good (rips, tape, etc). The $5 French is at least a VF30 and I will be submitting it along with the chartered banknote at the ANA to PMG for grading. The chartered banknotes I pick up when I see a bargin and honestly, the one that I am referring to above was a bargin - it's in AU or better condition. It's in the mail, and I should have it tomorrow. |

The question remains.
How do you determine if a chartered banknote is considered to be a "remainder"?

There's a lot of factors that come into play.. but the ones that come to my mind are:
1) Signatures
2) Serial number
3) Bank it's drawn on
4) The date of issue
5) Condition of the note

Collect Bank of C, from 1935 to now., I do..Maybe someone wants to collect the Denom. of 3.oo dollar..An undated Remainder (Question)$3.oo note issued by St.StephensJointStock Banking Company(N.B.)from the 1830's sold in 2010..Maybe someone will like a 4.oodollar denomination-1876 Bank of Toronto $4.oo in VG (One of 3 examples with blue "Collingwood" overprint) sold in 2010 for 16000.
