I very much like both the first and second portraits as each was nicely executed and with a young QE2. Between the two, I prefer the first portrait over the second as it was struck in a higher relief which adds to its attractiveness.

I was born in '53 so that was the design of my elementary school years. When I started collecting coins in junior high most of the coins out there were Portrait One so I think that is my favourite.

I like the first. Simple, balanced, attractive design in high relief.

First portrait for sure.
Reason? Queen Elizabeth was young back then, and her bust actually looks suitable for an attractive coin design.
Now? errrrr......not so much.

It's Cecil Thomas for me (not used on Canadian coins).
Among Canadian coins, I like the first portrait.

Another obverse portrait not on that list is by Vladimir Gottwald, it was only used on a commemorative Australian 50 Cent coin released for a royal visit in 2000. The Royal Australian Mint has some information about the design on their website:

Here is a cool web site, with Queen Elizabeth portraits through time, on paper money.

Circa 1998. For me this is what a queen should look like on a coin. The eyes tell all.

I prefer the young head obverses. 1953 was her first year on coins and the year I was born.

I like the first (Mary Gillick) portrait best but I also quite like the youthful crowned portrait that was used on some Commonwealth coins, such as Hong Kong coins up to the mid 1970s and the British Caribbean Territories coins of 1955-65.

Jumping in really late in this conversation...
I like the 1965 portrait, when struck in high relief. It just looks strange on a low relief strike.
