Mintmark looks bogus to me. I wouldn't buy a 16-d unless slabbed by PCGS or NGC.

The coin is real, but the "D" might not be. Only buy graded/slabbed unless you are 101% sure.

Might be my eyes are getting old but that D on the back looks sort of like a 0 and a D and possibly a Q. If this one is real, sure is an odd looking mint mark. Might be from a secret US Mint in a suburb of Denver. Even looks like a 0 over A. On a coin with the reputation of one of the World's most counterfeited coins, I'd only look for a slabbed one.

I think it's real, but I'm looking at pictures. If you own it send it in for TPG then you'll know for sure. If you are thinking about buying it then get an extended return period so you can return it if it is bad. The mint mark has some funky toning to it but we can guess all day as to whether it's genuine or altered.

It was an ebay purchase. I have been debating on paying for it or canceling transaction.

He has excellent feedback and appears to take care of issues. Call the Seller and talk to him.

See if the seller is willing to ship straight to ANACS and receive payment when it is authenticated. On a coin like that, he should be willing to do that.
To me, it looks fake. I do not like that MM at all. As mentioned, the wear doesn't match. It IS in the right spot I think, but like carl said, that looks for all the world like an over date. I would not make this purchase without that arrangement I mentioned.

I am not totally certain but my inclination is toward genuine but you should get it certified to be sure its the real deal. Quote: a coin in that condition should have the mint mark partly worn and should appear connected to the worn edge, as in this example This coin is in a similar condition but the rim is not worn into the mint mark. http://coins.ha.com/itm/mercury-dim.../1206-7839.s

I wouldn't buy it, but only because I don't trust the mint Mark. There are other choices of similar coins with better mint marks.

you really should ask questions before buying

I also agree with Treashunt..... If you have any doubts ALWAYS go the "Ask Seller A Question" route BEFORE hitting the "Bid or But It Now" buttons.
It helps to keep the lid on the Rolaids bottle.

The wear to the mint mark is not even to the rest of the peripheral, almost like glue or sodder on, or could be a S that tooled to the shape of a D. This is one I did stay away from also.
