You need a 1938 and not a 38 D? That's actually good because the 38 is relatively easy.

I recently found a 38D, but I must have at least a dozen 1938 (plains).

Great stats ... sorry I missed your comments when they first appeared ... too much work and not enough free time.

You appear based on my experience to be well on your way to a roll-found circulation strike set.

Note that I am currently at 314,300 nickels searched and still need two coins to seal the deal ... it's great fun to search for them and hopefully you gain as much enjoyment from the hunt as I have over the years.

Looking forward to any updates you provide ... stay true to the quest!

I've been through another 20,000 nickels for a total of 40,000 searched.
Still trying to fill a nickel album from circulation (1938-present). In the past 10 boxes, I filled 4 holes: 1938, 1942D, 1953S, and 1955. Not as many as I was hoping, but I am making progress. I'm now 11 coins away from being finished. I also upgraded a bunch of other coins.

Most interesting find in this set of 20,000 was a Liberty nickel (1904). Even though it's pretty low grade, it's still amazing to find a 110 year old coin in circulation. Second most interesting was an AU 1948-D. Really nice condition to find in circulation. Found it in the second to last roll of a box that was otherwise pretty disappointing.

After searching a total of 40,000 coins, I'm still missing 11 to complete the set:
1938S, 1939D, 1939S
1942P, 1942S, 1943D, 1944D, 1944S, 1945P
1950D, 1951S

Here are my stats by category after going through 40,000 coins:

Type Number Rate (1 per X nickels)
 War Nickels 11 3636
1938-1939 24 1667
1940-1949 (except War Nickels) 176 227
1950-1959 259 154
Buffalo (with dates) 3 13333
Buffalo (without dates) 1 40000
 Liberty nickels 1 40000

TOTAL of Above 475 84

Excellent update ... your roll searching is tracking mine and I wish you the very best of luck as you continue to pursue the entire circulation strike set from rolls.

It can be done ... I'm still 2 coins short at 317,600 nickels searched.

Looking forward to your next update.

goobot - with all due respect ... your posting in this thread is confusing the original posters attempt to keep us informed.

Politely suggest that a new thread in the Roll Hunting Forum would be well received and replied to.

BTW - are you implying that within 2 boxes of nickels you have already bagged both the 1950 and 1950-D.

That would be amazing - looking forward to viewing photographs of each of then in their new thread.

It's been a long time but I've been through another 20,000 nickels for a total of 60,000 searched.
In the past 10 boxes, I've filled four holes (1945P, 1951S, 1939D, 1950D) in my album.

I'm still missing 7 to complete the set:
1938S, 1939S
1942P, 1942S, 1943D, 1944D, 1944S

Most interesting find was a 1950D. Very excited to have that one found.
Other interesting finds:
a 1956 proof and 1963 proof both looking nearly brand new.
a double headed nickel

Here are my stats by category after going through 60,000 coins

Thanks for the update! I am long overdue to update my spreadsheets. Have found 2 complete sets of Jeffersons in 3 years of searching through approximately 1 million nickels.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

It's been many years since I searched Jefferson nickel rolls and looked at change but I do sometimes regret that I let them all go that were less than AU or MS a long time ago.
It was after dumping, selling or giving away my discards that I learned there were other Henning nickels besides the no mint mark 1944. I am sure I let more than a few go.

Those were fun days finding nice nickels in the wild.

One question .... roughly how long does it take you to go through a box? Just curious.

Good question. I actually don't know how long it takes to go through a box. I usually go through them while watching something. Or I do a few rolls while waiting for something.
I'd guess about two hours for a box. Fortunately I like doing it otherwise it'd be a huge chore and not worth doing.
