I just added my email to the "remind me" list. I wouldn't mind picking up another at that price.

Quote: Just think if one could order this at the $1,090 price tag you'd be getting it for $150 less than what the people paid when it debuted. They were paid $150 to wait. Just like those who wait a few months to buy the new smartphone.

I will admit that, given the popularity of Kennedy halves in general among collectors and given how unique this coin was, I really thought it would sell out and already be selling on the secondary market for twice the original asking price by now. It's a bit shocking and sad to know they didn't even hit their allotted limit.

Not shocking to me. The Kennedy series is popular because it is somewhat affordable. For many, this single coin is worth about the same as their entire Kennedy collection (many specific factors aside, of course).

I'm a little surprised at that too, but this is a case where it doesn't really matter to me where the price ends up because I don't have any intention of selling mine. I'm just thrilled to have it. It is (for obvious reasons) the crown jewel of my Kennedy collection.
Note to potential burglars: Original is in a safe deposit box. A chocolate coin replica is what I'm displaying at my house.

Not really surprising, $1100, $1400, $1500 what ever price point it was at is a LOT of $. A lot of people (non coin collectors) were interested because of the subject matter, but the two cheaper sets ($10 and $50 IIRC) satisfied a lot of that need.

The four coin silver Kennedy set was $100. Which has performed best from an investment standpoint? It's the $10 2 coin clad set.

I have both the $100 silver set and the $10 clad set. The gold Kennedy is a dream coin for sure, but there are a few things ahead of it on my list (like finishing some other Dansco albums).

Looks like I will need to seek one on the aftermarket, that is if I ever find the means to afford one.

This coin broke my heart. It is a phony bogus creation intended for money grubbing profiteering by The Powers That Be. Little if any effort was expended on the design and the shenanigans surrounding first, early, whatever strikes rubbed salt into the wound. I purchased one directly from the Mint against my own better judgment later on in the order period just to keep my Kennedy set complete but even at that the coin differs from all the others with inscriptions. At least they sent me one from an apparently new die as it blows away my friend's "early release" or whatever it says after he spent many more dollars to get PR69DCAM, a pariah in this silly registry set market. These coins have had 3 different compositions 90% 40% and base metal clad, but whoever heard of a gold full sized Half Dollar except for the rare Panama Pacific fantasy strikes of 1915 ? IMHO they should have waited for his 2017 100th birthday and denominated the coin more relative to its weight and composition.

Quote: ...but whoever heard of a gold full sized Half Dollar... Indeed this is a first for the U.S. Mint, but that makes the coin that much more interesting (and desirable) in my opinion. And...why not make one? Quote: IMHO they should have waited for his 2017 100th birthday... But there wasn't a coin minted for his birthday. This is the anniversary of the Kennedy half dollar, which happens to coincide roughly with his death. I agree it would be less macabre to have a coin representing a more joyous event, but his death is also an important piece of American history. Quote: ...and denominated the coin more relative to its weight and composition. So, instead of face value of $0.50, something more like $37.50 If we're to go by how AGEs are denominated? I see where you're coming from but then it wouldn't be a half dollar and would be more of a commemorative (although arguably this series has turned into just that). Speaking of the AGE it makes no sense to have a coin with intrinsic value of well over $1k be denominated at $50 (1 oz AGE), but then again the Kennedy gold half and the AGEs are NCLT and thus not intended to be used as money, so does it really matter? Clearly you're not a fan of this coin, which is certainly fair. I clearly think it's outstanding, and am just offering some differing thought. Oh, and

The JFK gold half dollar brougnt back good memories for me. I remember looking forward to getting one of the coins when I was in the 9th grade. My local bank finally got them in May. It was such treat although the coin I got was pretty beat up.
It was fun to compare the artwork on the gold piece with a 1964 Proof Cameo half dollar I have. The mint did a pretty good job of duplicating the original artwork. Over the years the design devices have changed quite a bit.
