"let's say it was a prize that had to be claimed in gold or silver." Oh, well that's simple then. I'd go with gold because it's much easier to hide and it's worth 66X more than silver, and it's denser. My answer still depends on the reasons of why to own. My reasons are different than yours and from everyone else's based on their experience and needs. It's easy to assume that everyone's in the same boat when we are not. A SHTF experience is different in the USA than in any other nation. My experience with junk silver is that it is junk, but an American will have a differing opinion. An ounce of silver won't buy you much in supplies - it's just too abundant on this continent. Europe was totally flooded with hyperinflation even from just the silver that the Spanish Empire brought home - and there's more to be found underground! That's not to say that gold is rare or anything close but these days it's still worth more than silver. I think people go with silver over gold because they have blind faith that it will shoot back to pre-central banking days levels of 10 or 16 or 20:1 ratios.

Quote: An ounce of silver won't buy you much in supplies...it is junk. Well that depends. Are you buying dinner or a boat? Try portioning an ounce of gold out for some coffee, a pound of salt, a box of ammo or a tank of gas.

So let's say I win big at the Casino and my wife says "You should spend a grand on coins!" I'd throw down on a Roosevelt First Spouse Unc first. (I really want this but likely won't be able to afford one) Dig up one of those Doctor Who silver dollars from the Perth Mint, yes with the TARDIS. Fill out my Unc Silver Eagles. Man that $1,000 went fast!

Gold, gold, gold......my SDB is so heavy that I consider trading half of it for some gold........lighten it up a bit and make some room

No one has mentioned that silver is much more volatile than gold. Considering the extreme downward momentum, If I had to invest right now I would make sure that it was either gold coin(s) or add a little more $ and buy one full oz of gold bullion or a gold eagle.

Had to say this...
"So let's say I win big at the Casino and my wife says "You should spend a grand on coins!"
I'd throw down on a Roosevelt First Spouse Unc first."
How will your wife react when you come home with a FIRST spouse coin? It won't be pretty.
I didn't realize this was coin-specific. Is it?

No. People are just into coins I guess. It is for bullion, coins, etc. So, it is not coin specific.

Gold is too expensive and your money wouldn't go as far, seems like putting all your eggs in one basket. I would go 90% junk but that's what I collect for fun. I am more scared that gold will drop half it's value in the near future than I see silver going back to $9 ounce without a similar drop in gold.

I agree with duncanbishop24 about getting 90% silver coins. You could get more for your money & if you needed to sell later & silver price was up you could make a nice profit.

Not only that, but less chance of 90% being counterfeited if silver hits a big spike up.
