British Coins, Please Help Me With A Price Guide In Dollars?

The ongoing problem I have found is not converting the pound sterling price to US or Canadian dollars, but figuring out which coins are worth more or less on this side of the pond.

He has put in a lot of hours into this and I find it very useful. The Standard Catalog can be a good place, but the market seems to be all over the place.

I have found the following;

The Krause Standard Catalog is pretty close if you are dealing with a LCS.

ebay prices are all over the place and too inconcistant to make good judgement calls with

Slabbed coins are often overgraded as they are graded by American standards. An NGC or PCGS XF 45 will seldom be better than a VF to an Englishman.

Graded coins are often insanely priced and will not match any price guide I have found.

There is a guide called Spinks that I am told is quite good, but again it is for the British market. The only time I had one in hand it was a year old and the dealer was asking $160 US for it (he still has it as far as I know).

Remember if it is below VF US grade standards than as a rule it is concidered not collectable by English Collectors.

Spinks pricing is for the lowest variety of each coin (especially for hammered)
Collectors coins GB only goes back to 1797 but it covers the most varieties and IMO is the best guide & cheap.
There are plans to take it back to 1672.to cover 99.9% of the milled issues.

No great shakes in that lot you bought.
But I would say $100 CAD is a deal Value around $200 - $250 CAD on ebay

I have listed quite a few of them in low grades and they always sell between $5 to $9.99 USD

Wait, I think there is one coin that may worth something...assuming it is an EF...the 1885 Shilling. According to Krause (numismaster.com), it's worth $180.

Also, the 1910 shilling could be around $100 if AU condition and the EF half crown and florins are around $30 to $40 each. As for the 1887 6 pence, there is one variety (KM#757) that is worth $110 otherwise $30.

Of course, these are retail prices and I do agree with some of the comments .... that prices are all over the places and anything below XF will not fetch much, and grading english coins is not easy.

In 1887 there was a shield reverse shilling and a Normal Reverse. The normal reverse says one shilling and the date.

If you go to the link I sent you will see what that gothic florin should look like. One of the worlds most beautifull coins for my money. you can look up the price just remember if you think VF price it as F. Multiply by the exchange rate 1.6 or there about.

That will give you a high end retail price IF there is a strong market for Enlish in your area.

In my area unless a coin is a stunner the smaller silver goes for a little above melt. The half crowns and florins. especially the gothic florin will have a bit of a premium.
