I mean..we're only borrowing them for a while and then hoping that the same care continues long after we're gone.. D I've never seen coins like the last ones posted here..so perfect..and I'm guessing....also sooo rare .. . .

WHY are some 38 dollars sort of frosty, and others are not?

Delvec had good examples of frosty '36 and '37 on Page 6 of this topic, here is a frosty '38. It almost looks like an oxidation.

Its just a mixture of how old the die is and how the dies were produced. Like in 1945 they were shinier with more cameo because of a new die making procedure.

The 45's started using "chrome plated" dies ..and chrome is chrome..Very tough and leaves a shine and the dies stand up well.. The 38 I posted has some contacts on the face but is also a tough frosty one .."for that year".. Not at all easy to find better. ..and I would have loved to have had it better. Some "hand picked gems" naturally do exist ..but were probably never in those big bags.. That 35,36, 37 and "38" all came directly from the bank and placed in a pill jar and untouched until I purchased them all (including that 47 pointed dot) in one shot. All of the standard nice ones here came from a one shot deal back in 1970..and that's where my serious collecting started.. Notice how that 38 was not as nice as the 35 to 37.. but frosty all the same.. They traveled by bag to each bank and bumped along the roads until making it into the tellers drawer..and that's what happens even before they get into a pocket. These never made it to a pocket and were safely placed away..until the day of sale to me..

Ah it seems I missed this post, lots of interesting coins here! Speaking of die clashes on silver dollars, here are some of my personnal favorites. The half-moon on a 1949 and one of Zoell's "broken branch" on a 1950 (although it occurs on more than one year. The 1949: The 1950: And you can also see the 5 in his throat, but I don't have a picture of it right now.
