Your 1940-S looks like an early die state. I think you are right and it was very early in production. I disagree with the reverse die being changed. The reverse die shows that the spacing is off a bit, yet detail like the bowtie and ear on Lincoln as well as other details seen only on early die states clearly shows. If this had been a late die stage then Die Deterioration would have left much softer detail

I know it's been a couple of years since anyone posted here. My dad found this in my stash of wheats a year or two ago. Unfortunately, it has a nasty black stain on the reverse.Still a CRH find.
