Thanks for confirming my suspicions. Based on his commentary, he seems to know how rare a 16-D is.
But based on everything else, he doesn't have a clue as to how to regard a real 16-D in this condition.
A little knowledge is a ridiculous thing.

You should contact seller saying it's almost 100% fake.

Ed, what makes you say it's not a good fake?

Why hasn't he had it TPG'd? Avoid.

A very poor fake. The facial proportion and the nose are not correct.

Here is his response when I asked him how much he paid for and that it could be a fake:
"I didn't pay thousands for it and that is why I put in my description that is a very commonly altered coin. The only way to know for sure is to have it graded."
In other words... "I know nothing!" --Sgt. Schultz

So what is the consensus? Is it a complete forgery or is it a 16-P with a D added?

This is really dumb. If he even slightly suspected it was real, he would have had it authenticated by a TPGS. Then he could have tried for about $15 to 20 Thousand dollars. Why mess around for hundreds when could have made thousands. Easy, he too suspects it is a fake.

The coin is genuine, the mint Mark is not.
Either the mint mark was created by carefully reworking the metal in the mintmark area OR it is a "D" mint mark that has been soldered on to a genuine coin.
The discoloration around the mint mark is a huge red flag.

A comparison to known graded coins indicates it is a fake. I reported it th ebay. I can't sit by and watch someone lose ther hard earned money on this coin.

The dime has disappeared. Hope that's a good sign.

Funny enough, I checked the listing this morning, and it was still up. Had $250+ in bids, too. Maybe there were enough reports for ebay to finally realize there was a problem. If I remember correctly, this is the day the listing would have ended. It was probably pulled at the last minute.

Is this the same coin relisted here? The seller says that ebay pulled the listing and he now states that the D is added. http://www.coincommunity.com/go/f1.asp?target=http://www.ebay.com/itm/1916-D-Mercury-Dime-D-ADDED-/191407137231?&hash=item2c90c121cf
