Medieval, it is a difference that was noticed and the value of the coin most likely is a large factor to stopping any one person from completing a serious study on the subject.
May I suggest that you start a poll on the subject, would help to learn what percentage have #3 missing, partial or complete.

Just checked the 2 I have and all three areas are well struck up. Both are sort of nice VF coins .

Not a VF-20, there is too much wear on the leaves and braid to call it that. Solid F-15.

A completed crown jewel is very scarce---I have only seen 2 or 3 out of 600 coins.
A reverse weak strike very common--probably 50% of all the coins--especially the N, T, and 5
charlton lists 4 varieties---blunders and re-engraved 5
One leaf is not attached--has no stem--not a variety

Minted +-700,000 but all recalled and melted for 25 cent coin.
Rob Turner's research estimates survivors are 7,642 coins.
That figure does not account for destruction of coins through jewelers, misplacement's,lost and disasters.

With a budget of $2,000,000 this coin market could be captured and controlled for $261 per coin----first buy up all the holed, scrap ones. then ebay and auction ones lastly the dealers who will benefit in the price rise then destroy all the scrap, holed ones sell all g,f grades or destroy them Take a bath with all your gold coins------------Good plan? maybe not. |

I've only seen weakly struck 1858's ...or 1858's with soft details as described above.
Could anyone here post a well struck one for us to compare it to?

lambercolin..Outstanding examples and the best I've ever seen.
If I was to guess,..I'd say that the "reasonable strike" was a gem specimen.
Most beautiful example that I've ever seen here...and I've never seen a "full jewel" before...
Thanks for posting such beauties..
I hope that everyone here appreciates what they're looking at..

I just recently purchased a completed crown jewel in vf20.. I didn't even notice until the coin was in hand! It would be interesting to see how many we can spot. Does anyone else own one?
