That's a long trip Ron, I have 5 places to buy from within walking distance so I suppose that makes a huge difference.

Well, I probably live at least 8 hours from anywhere that may sell ancient coins, possibly even more so I am probably forced to buy online, and Vcoins does seem fairly expensive compared to other places online. Even auction sites like CNG seem to sell many that go for quite a bit less than that.

I will probably end up getting something off of E-bay eventually how does this one look?

The few establishments in my area that sell coins don't have ancient coins (not surprising), so its just online for me also.

That particular seller has a good reputation. Coin could be a life time issue which will be more expensive than the posthumous ones.

If you want to buy from an ebay seller, check the "dodgy seller" list on forvmancientcoins. Check the sellers reputating and check out any negative feedback. Look at the other coins that have on sale, do they all look OK. Check previous sales, do the coins look OK.

When the price of the coin goes up, look for a similar coin on vcoins. Look at the price they are charging. If the bidding goes close to that, then you are probably not going to get a bargain.

The seller is well known with a good reputation and the coin looks OK. However you really have to be careful with buying higher price coins on ebay , for every good seller there are ten that are not.

As an after thought arnoldoe, TIFF buys some nice coins but I can't remember the auction site.

Looks like someone tried to drill holes in the coin.

Re: 'LANZ' The Negative feedback does contain some accusations of selling 'fake' coins.

BTW what is the meaning of 'OP' please?

"OP" means "original poster" or "original post." It's a way to reply to the person who started the thread without typing out their whole name on here.

arnoldoe: Unfortunately the drill hole looks to be reasonably recent, at least in the last 20 years or so.

If you are 8 hours from a dealer who knows his stuff regarding ancient coins, perhaps it might be wise to cast your net internationally, and write or email to a few that you may be able to establish a good correspondance with you.

I know of a collector who lives in a very remote part of Australia, and he has wide international connections.

Buy a few second hand auction catalogs with ancient coins in them on line, that originate from some of the best coin auctioneers. when you feel a bit more confidant email one of these to your preference and inquire about some of their stock.

I went straight to the top to get my first Greek coin, because I knew that I didn't know quite enough about them,
to buy with confidence.

My first ancient Greek coin came direct from Spinks in London in 1979, and I live in Australia. That coin was a gold stater.

Well, it appears whoever did that succeeded in ruining the value of the coin, they probably would have got around 150-200 without it but it went for about $50 on ebay.
