Only in my dreams do I own a coin like that...just beautiful. So when you "send a coin back" would you remove it from the holder to get a fresh grade, or leave it in?

I'm going to look into the 'ever DL coin is sent to CAC'...I haven't heard that. I guess I don't really care if it gets upgraded.
I personally feel like PCGS is more likely to upgrade a coin out of holder rather than sending it for a reconsideration in the holder. Maybe someone has more experience with PCGS in this area and could add more to the conversation?

I would imagine removing it from holder would make the most sense... at the very least it removes a predisposition to conform to a set value... ideally they should look at each coin in a fresh light, but shoving 64 in front of the might them look for reasons to lower it rather than raise it.

The way the light was directed on the coin obscures the fields, which I will bet are hairlined, hence the 64 grade.

Very nice coin! Proofs are a challenge to grade from static photos so it tough to say if it is worth the resubmission.

I'm curious about the reasons for the grade myself. I do know that slide marks from old albums are an issue with these proofs and that could have caused the 64 grade if they are at all visible.

Quote: Thank you, barryg! You're extremely welcome. And may I just say, what a gorgeous coin you've got there! I bought my proof Barber Half from David Lawrence as well, btw. It was originally priced at $1250, but he eventually dropped the price to $1168 and I snatched it up. I wish I could have afforded a PR64 example, but I'm happy with the way my PR63 looks. Sooo... Do I understand you correctly that you plan to get a proof example of every year Barber Half? If so, I wish you well. Way too rich for my blood, though (of course, if my wife agreed to sell the house...)

HA HA Thank you! The beauty of your coins is what really got me going here. I was looking at DL again last night and they've got a few days left on an '02 PF65 for around 5 grand (estimated value, going for 2 and a half last time I checked). That is too rich for my blood but boy do I want it! Maybe they'll drop the price on this one a few grand (yeah, right)!

Received this coin today. Obverse and reverse have a cameo appearance but maybe not strong enough for the designation. No hairlines are visible with the naked eye, however under 16x magnification some can be made out in the fields. The toning is as attractive as the photos lead you to believe and the reverse is even more striking in-hand. There are no slide marks on Miss Liberty's cheek from old National or similar albums (which, from my understanding, if visible make PF64 the highest assignable grade).
I'm not sure what kept this coin from a 65 or possibly a low 66. PF66 can be given if the hairlines require magnification to be seen (barring other issues, of course). PF67 should have NO hairlines, even under magnification, so that is out of the question. So I have a coin with NO slide marks, few hairlines that do require magnification, almost strong cameo appearance, great strike and wonderful eye appeal. I know they (PCGS) don't factor in some of those things when grading, however the only issue I could imagine would be the old remnants of fingerprints that have toned and are visible on the obverse from about 9 to 12. Even these you have to work semi-hard to see in-hand.
I'm of the opinion now for sure that this should go back. If anyone with more proof Barber experience than I thinks otherwise please let me know. Or if anyone has an opinion on if it should go back in or out of the holder I'd like to hear it!
By the way; I, like most of you, do not need PCGS or CAC to tell me I have a beautiful coin. BUT, when these coins go to my girls someday (hopefully long from now), if they choose to sell them, I'd like for them to get the maximum return. And unfortunately, a lot of people pay for the holder and not the coin and I'm not sure that will change anytime soon.

You must have some deep pockets. This is only my second post on here, starting to wonder if I even belong? Just to complete a set in G is a tremendous task, for your average collector. heck I can't even figure out how to post a pic?

thecoinguy1964, Everyone belongs here. We have people of all collecting backgrounds and budgets here. Some of the higher end coins are usually posted here because they don't want to be out so much money without getting a second opinion.

thecoinguy1964, as coinlover168 said YOU BELONG!! I just read all I can read on certain coins before I bought them. Once I learned how to look for quality coins in any given grade I was able to buy coins that would eventually turn a small profit and allow me to get coins like this Barber. Of course, I've lost money, too! Enjoy your stay here. There are a lot of good people that enjoy coins in any grade as much as you so $$ isn't important. Its about the coins. You've found the right place. Posting a picture is relatively easy: Try this link http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...g_images.asp
