These were actual submissions from grade school children for the Wyoming design. Wyoming showed class by including them in the "official" submissions page.

I do like the Alaska design. It might be my favorite. I like WV (no bias). It has nice symmetry with the New River Gorge Bridge spanning the width, and the mountains below are nice and frosty on the proofs.

My favorites are Nevada, Colorado (maybe I am biased because I like mountains/hiking?), and North Dakota. I think that the Alaska design is absolutely AWESOME, and I am really looking forward to that one!

I dislike Wyoming and Florida, both of those were disappointing to me. Wyoming is too plain, even though the bronco is a classic Wyoming symbol the coin needs something else. On Florida's the balance is really strange to me!

dustin--I completely agree with you about Ohio. Notice that I picked Michigan as one of my least favorites (along with all of 2004), and I live there too. The states that went out of their way to please everyone (or more likely not to offend the 'wrong' people) generally have my least favorite designs.

Alabama is especially lame to me. Who thinks of Helen Keller when they think of Alabama? Where did that come from?

I think the family farm aspect is why I like the Vermont design. I grew up in Vermont and remember spring days when the sap was running.

Your farm implement idea would be cool.

Jim,

Do you have a 20x blowup of that WV bridge ... I think I see a bungee jumper or parachutist down among those rocks at the bottom.

Dave,

Be careful using those words in the same sentence (bridge and blowup).

About the size, I know, but it was the best picture I could find on short notice. It is a nice high-res picture though.

Actually Jim I was making a funny about the bridge's notoriety ... lots of bungee jumpers and base jumpers use it. Some only use it once.

Dave,

Gotcha. Seems like a candidate for a parody quarter.

Actually, Bridge Day is coming up in October. There happened to be one of those "one-time-uses" last year.

Where in Vermont did you grow up? I was raised in Maine, at went to college in Vermont at Lyndon State. My wife grew up in the tiny town of Holland, Vermont just east of Derby on the Canadian border.

Thunder--I grew up and went to high school in South Burlington; I also lived in Richmond and Winooski, and spent a lot of time in the Milton/St. Albans and the Route 100 Montpelier/Stowe areas. I did lots of long bike rides up north, maybe you know some of the places like around Lake Carmi and Jay Peak and the Montgomery Eden area. Also traveled a lot up in the Newport/Memphramagog area. I know right where you're talking about where your wife grew up. Ah, the Kingdom...

Being from Florida, I agree with nearly everyone that it is disappointing. There are plenty of things they could have chosen with historic justification. Wyoming is the other one I don't like. Favorites are Alaska and Wisconsin.
